Hidden Gems: Meet Zé Carlos Vaz Martins of SALON VIP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zé Carlos Vaz Martins

Hi Zé Carlos, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into hairstyling began at 14 when I first started playing with mannequin heads. I would cut and style their hair, just like my mom had shown me. As a hairstylist and salon owner in Point Loma, San Diego, my mother was the driving force behind my passion. From a young age, I was captivated by the creative side of hair, and I always knew I wanted to turn it into a career. I eagerly awaited the day I could finish high school and enroll in beauty school to perfect my craft.

Right after graduation, I plunged into my education at Paul Mitchell The School in San Diego. I fully immersed myself in the industry, attending premier hair shows and getting involved in runway events. Every experience was a chance to learn and grow, deepening my passion for the art of hairstyling.

After beauty school, I had the privilege of joining one of San Diego’s top salons, where I trained under some of the best educators in the field. I traveled for shows and events, gaining invaluable insights along the way. One of the most memorable moments in my career was presenting our collection at Aveda Congress to an audience of 5,000—a truly unforgettable experience that further cemented my love for this craft.

In 2019, I took a major step in my journey and co-opened Salon VIP 2.0 with my mom in Mission Valley. After five years of success, we relocated to the vibrant and eclectic neighborhood of University Heights in December 2024.

I specialize in precision haircuts, rich, dark color techniques, and the luxurious Great Lengths hair extensions. My passion for this craft runs deep—it’s woven into the fabric of who I am, and I can’t imagine ever stepping away from it. Hairstyling isn’t just my career; it’s my true obsession!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In March 2020, the world was hit by the unexpected pandemic. Shortly after launching my business, I found myself navigating salon closures and stringent safety measures. At the time, I couldn’t foresee what the future would hold for my business. However, through positive thinking and the implementation of safety protocols, I was able to weather the storm. By the end of it, I emerged with a renewed perspective on my business and a deeper appreciation for both each day and my health.

As you know, we’re big fans of SALON VIP. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When my mom approached me about opening a salon together, we spent a lot of time brainstorming names. I suggested we revive the name she once used for her salon. Not only did I want to bring that brand back to life, but I also genuinely believe that every client should feel like a VIP. I pour my heart and passion into my work, and I can see that my clients feel it too. From the moment they walk into the salon, I make sure they feel comfortable and welcomed. Consistency, I believe, is key to keeping a business thriving, and I always strive to make my clients feel just as special as they did the first time they sat in my chair. I’m incredibly proud of where our business is today and the talented stylists who are part of Salon VIP. I’m excited to see what the future holds for all of us.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
In September 2024, my mom and I made the decision for me to take full ownership of the business, and I chose to relocate SALON VIP to a new space to foster its growth. It was definitely a daunting move, but I believed it was the best choice for the future of the business. Now that we’re settled into our new location in University Heights, everything is falling into place, and the business is thriving. I truly believe in dreaming big and pursuing ambitious goals, even if they come with risks.
