Hunter Bentley of North County San Diego on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Hunter Bentley and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Hunter , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day would to wake up at 6:30pm to take care of my mom for next 3 hours so my dad can go to work. afterwords I would get to work film or coming up with content ideas to future shorts/ TikTok’s/ reels for the day

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name Hunter, I go by DJ Hunts or DJHUNTSOFFFICIAL depending on what social media you’re on. I do short film comedy content. I’m known for taking standup comedian bits and making a parody video out of it; dressing up as the characters in the joke, lip syncing over their audio and basically bringing their joke to life.

I’ve also created my own comedy content; one particular video that I would say is one of my (if not the most) viral video I have produced is my “Avada Kedavra; The Wand Chooses the Octive” video. Where throughout the video, I pick up different sizes of twigs going from the smallest twig and then picking up bigger twigs to where I pick up a long giant tree branch and quote the killing spell from the Harry Potter films “Avada Kedavra” but each time twig gets the bigger, the lower my voice gets when saying “Avada Kedavra”

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I credit my mom for seeing and believing in the potential who I could become. She was always there to support me in anything and everything that I was doing. There was one point in my life when times where tough (financially) and I was ready to sell my dj board and quit djing (at least for awhile) my mom said she would help cover some of my daily financial costs: gas, food, and some the payments that I was still making on my dj board.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
When my mom had her stroke and the lack of support or communication from friend and people in my that weren’t there to be there for me was huge learning curb for me. It help my realize that people even the ones closest to you are gonna let you down and not be there for you when you need it the most. And after coming to that realization, I stop caring what people thought of me or had to say to me; I just took there words with “a grain of salt”. And continued to do what I wanted to do regardless of how it would make people think or feel.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I always want to be real on camera and off camera, and always strive to be 100% real all the time. There are too many fake people online and not enough genuine honest people. The only time you see me being fake is when I’m putting on a character for a comedy sketch, otherwise, the DJHUNTS you see online, is the Hunter you would see in person.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I was someone who brought the type of entertainment they needed at a time when they needed the most. I still get messages/ DM’s today from people who enjoy my content telling me that they were depressed or on the brink of suicide, and that when my videos popped up on there For You page, they would laugh and or enjoy the video and it would change there depressed mood to something more happy or joyful. I believe we’re in entering into the age where the modern/ average person is not longer getting they’re news or entertainment from television anymore, but now from they’re iPhones and androids. And just as much people today want or need to hear what’s going on in the world today they also need that break from the news and good funny entertaining videos, and I want be the content creator/ influencer who provided that from them.
