Inspiring Conversations with Jane & Jon Yu of Veil & Vinyls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane & Jon Yu.

Hi Jane & Jon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For a long time, we both wanted to start our own business, so we decided to combine our side hustles (wedding planning & DJing) to start Veil & Vinyls. After we got married in 2018, we both quit our jobs and launched the company. Our desire is to help engaged couples have a good time planning their wedding, and make sure they have the best time on their big day.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Because our wedding business was not sustainable on its own in the first year of business, we had to pick up additional freelance work to stay financially afloat, meaning we were pretty much working all the time. 2020 started off really strong, but when the pandemic hit, business came to a standstill, as it did for many people. Things are starting to pick up slowly, but we are still a ways away from consistently being able to work on our wedding business, as the future is still up in the air. We had to make some difficult decisions, such as moving back home (with Jane’s parents) to LA from NY, which was not in our plans for at least a few more years.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are not your average wedding company – we are a husband and wife team that offers planning, design and DJ services. With a touch of edge, we welcome creative ideas, and we encourage our clients to stay true to themselves with every decision. Transparency, empathy, and FUN are some of our operating values. As a long-time experiential producer for brands, Jane has the ability to provide a fresh perspective that is not common in the wedding industry. With a decade of DJing under his belt, Jon has experience working with brands, clubs, and restaurants which have helped him become a versatile open-format DJ across different environments.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We took a huge risk when we quit our jobs to start Veil & Vinyls. It was a big leap of faith, as we didn’t know where our next paycheck would come from. As a business owner, it’s impossible not to constantly be thinking about risk with every decision. Risk is a scary thing, but it’s necessary in life for someone to discover what they’re capable of, and to be able to progress and become exponentially better. At the end of the day, we see risk a positive thing.
