
Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Klisser.
Having grown up in one, it was a long time dream for Marilyn Klisser to own a Salon. In November of 2019, that dream finally came true when she bought Salon De Ville, a spacious salon in Marilyn’s favorite area of San Diego, Coronado. Marilyn, born in Europe, has a French mother who also was a salon owner and always was very into fashion, makeup and glamour. Marilyn had worked in three different salons before finally taking the leap and having her own. Though she was grateful for her time at each one and learned valuable lessons, at that time, she had wished she was in a position to upgrade, make needed changes and generally improve aspects of those salons. Now, she is in that position. Many factors make up a great salon- from the aesthetics to the functionality, basic elements like comfortable chairs and good lighting, and highest on the list to her, the culture and vibe of the salon. Marilyn is proud of the changes she has made to the salon over the last year and is happy to say that the Salon On First culture is welcoming, friendly and professional. She is grateful to have an incredible team of stylists who are hard-working, team players who truly support each other, and are excellent at their craft. Vidal Sassoon used to say, “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good,” and we agree! And, we like to take it a step further, “If you don’t look and FEEL great, we don’t feel great,” Our goal at Salon On First is for every client to leave looking and feeling better than when they walked in.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am ecstatic to be a salon owner and realize that being in business always comes with its challenges. From handling financials to marketing properly and being sure to choose your team very wisely, there are so many things to stay on top of. This year, however, has come with extreme additional challenges. Four months after buying the salon, the COVID 19 Pandemic hit. From March -December 2020, we were mandated to be closed by the California Governor, as well as by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology for six months out of the ten. It’s been an unusually difficult time to be a new business owner. Klisser is praying for grants to come in and for help from the landlord . She feels a lot of love and support from the wonderful clients and from the community and knows that if she can make it past this difficult time, she will be able to make it through most anything.
We’ve been impressed with Salon On First , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Salon On First is a full service Hair Salon that offers all things Hair, Make Up, Extensions, Waxing, Facials and Skincare Treatments. We even have a fabulous Nail Salon, right next door, to us- Be Polished. They are wonderful and don’t use strong smelling acrylics. So you can get everything done in almost one place! We welcome everyone warmly and have a strict no drama policy to make sure we put a positive vibe out at all times, and the needs of our clients first, above all. We want to pamper them and their hair, and have them walk out feeling and looking amazing. And of course, it’s in gorgeous Coronado island. French and Spanish speakers available. Five minutes from downtown, free parking. Gorgeous views of Downtown San Diego across the street. Escape to Salon On First.
Any big plans?
To make it through the pandemic and then the sky is the limit! Marilyn had so many plans for her new business before the pandemic hit, which grounded everything to an abrupt halt. She plans on doing lots of events, which promote community, family and outreach.
