Today we’d like to introduce you to Ace Sklar.
Ace, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began in high school, tinkering with our first home computer and watching the dot-com boom take off. My natural curiosity led me to uncover security gaps in my public school’s network, and I realized if schools weren’t locked down, no one was. At the same time, a friend and I launched a small game server and web-hosting business, which planted the entrepreneurial seed. After college, where I bounced between computer science and electrical engineering before discovering one of the very first cybersecurity programs, I knew I’d found my calling.
Over the next decade, I built my skills at startups and Fortune 500 companies alike, moving through roles in security operations, product security, and compliance. Along the way, I self-educated in regulatory frameworks like SOC 2 and HIPAA, seeing how essential they are to any robust security program.
Last year, I took the leap to launch Noble Solutions Consulting, bringing enterprise-grade cybersecurity and compliance leadership to growing businesses without the enterprise price tag.
Today, I partner with startups, SMBs, and regulated businesses (fintech, healthcare, IoT) across Southern California, helping them transform security from a checkbox into a true business enabler. I still love that early rush of fixing a glaring risk in a single afternoon, and I’m proud that Noble Solutions has grown purely through word-of-mouth—proof that even a solo consultant can make a big impact.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all, it was anything but smooth. Fresh out of college, I had zero hands-on cybersecurity experience beyond the ad-hoc IT support I’d provided in high school and college. I faced the classic catch-22: “How do I get hired without experience, and how do I gain experience without being hired?” Understandably, companies were reluctant to entrust a junior with access to their critical systems and data.
To break in, I got creative. I volunteered to handle security for a local San Diego nonprofit and attended every meetup and conference I could find. That persistence paid off when a small startup finally took a chance on me. After landing that paid role and earning key certifications, my career trajectory smoothed out, I progressed from Analyst to Chief Security Officer across startups and Fortune 500 companies in diverse industries.
Then, in the post-pandemic shake-up, widespread layoffs left me back at square one in a brutal job market. After months of interviews and dwindling emergency funds, I decided to put everything I’d learned into action and launched my own consulting practice. The early months were a balancing act: winning clients, marketing, and handling administration, while still hunting for full-time roles. Even now, just a year into it, I’m fine-tuning my rhythm, momentum, and sanity.
Today, I’m grateful for every obstacle. My experience didn’t just teach me how to survive in cybersecurity; hardships pushed me to make a living with no safety net as an entrepreneur.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Noble Solutions Consulting is a boutique cybersecurity and compliance firm built to serve growing companies from startups to mid-sized businesses that need enterprise-grade security without the enterprise-grade price tag. We specialize in:
• Fractional vCISO Services: Acting as your on-demand Chief Information Security Officer, we help you build and execute a security strategy, report to your board or investors, and keep you ahead of emerging threats.
• Compliance Readiness & Audit Support: Whether it’s SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001, or GDPR, we guide you through every step—gap analysis, policy creation, evidence collection, auditor liaising—so you pass on the first try.
• Risk Assessments & Quick-Win Remediation: We perform rapid program-level assessments (not just penetration tests), identify your highest-impact gaps, and deliver actionable fixes you can implement immediately.
• Cloud & Application Security Advisory: From secure architecture reviews to DevSecOps pipeline integrations, we embed security into your products and infrastructure.
• Incident Response & Continuous Improvement: We help you prepare for—and, if needed, respond to—cyber incidents, then continuously monitor and refine your defenses so you never fall behind.
What sets us apart:
• Business-First, Plain-English Approach: We translate technical risks into clear business impacts and practical next steps—no jargon, no overwhelm.
• All-In-One Partnership: You get a single point of contact for strategy, hands-on implementation, training, and ongoing advisory—no juggling multiple vendors.
• Local Roots, Global Expertise: Based here in San Diego, we bring deep Southern California market knowledge alongside best practices drawn from Fortune 500 environments.
Our proudest recent achievement was rescuing a company on the brink of failing its SOC 2 audit. After I joined to help them, I guided them back into full compliance in just two months, averting critical findings and restoring customer and prospect confidence in their security program.
We want your readers to know that with Noble Solutions Consulting, security and compliance become strategic advantages, not burdens. If you’ve ever felt stuck wondering “where do we even start?” or overwhelmed by audit checklists, we’re the partner who can both simplify the journey and accelerate your success.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has certainly nudged my journey in unexpected ways, sometimes opening doors I never knew existed, and other times pushing me to adapt when plans fell through. Early on, I was fortunate to land a volunteer role with a San Diego nonprofit that allowed me to gain hands-on security experience I couldn’t find elsewhere; that chance opportunity directly led to my first paid cybersecurity position. Conversely, the industry-wide layoffs after the pandemic felt like bad luck, forcing me back into a shrinking job market and challenging everything I’d built. But that setback turned out to be a blessing in disguise, it gave me the push I needed to launch my own consulting practice.
Today, I still rely on “luck” in the form of timing: new regulations, emerging threats, and evolving compliance demands continually create fresh opportunities for businesses to invest in security. Being ready to step in when those windows open has been as much about preparation as it has been about being in the right place at the right time. Ultimately, I believe luck favors the prepared, so I focus on building the skills, network, and reputation that help me turn whatever fate hands me, good or bad, into momentum for my clients and my business.
