Inspiring Conversations with Anita Lewis of Bastet Blessings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Lewis.

Anita, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved all things beauty. I went to all performing arts schools from elementary through high school, and I used to help do all the hair and make-up for myself and others. In doing so, I discovered that I had a passion for the beauty industry in addition to my passion for performing and I would help girls in my neighborhood or my school with their hair just for fun. While in college, I met a girl that would go on to be one of my best friends and her cousin was a stylist in a salon, I would often tag along when she went to get her hair done, and eventually her cousin became like a mentor to me and encouraged me to pursue hair. I have since gone to Paul Mitchell the School in downtown San Diego where I was working toward obtaining my cosmetology license, about halfway through I found out I was pregnant and had to be placed on bed rest, so I had to take a leave. I fully plan on returning to finish my program God willing toward the end of this year. Currently, I have my own salon space where I operate as a braider until I do receive my license and I am enjoying every minute of it. It has definitely been a long time, and I am so excited for the future!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has definitely not been the smoothest road for me, I have attempted to make this my main source of income at least 3 times. That is not to say I failed but more so learned things about myself and how to create a successful business. Each time I pick up new gems along the way that have helped me grow and evolve as a stylist and business owner. One of my biggest challenges is feeling like I don’t have the time, restarting my business this time around I have decided to continue to work my corporate job while doing hair on my days off until I can comfortably transition into being a stylist full time. I am still trying to find a balance between the 2 that is comfortable for me and works for my family. I have to say my biggest obstacle, however, is just me constantly doubting myself and my abilities. I am working on giving myself grace, enjoying the journey, and allowing myself room to evolve. I have developed a new faith in myself, and I am excited to share my talents with people!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bastet Blessings is the ultimate beauty experience that combines 5-star customer service with a top-tier salon experience, I specialize in braiding and natural hair styling mainly for women of color, but I do work on men’s and children’s hair as well. In an industry that a lot of people may believe is oversaturated it can be very hard to feel like anything sets you apart from the next stylist. I like to think that in addition to my talent, my service sets me apart from everyone else. I am most proud of the rapport I build with all of my clients, in addition to outstanding and affordable hair services, I want my clients to know that they can expect to be treated with the utmost respect. Bastet Blessings is a place for you to come as you are, and I mean that in the physical, mental, and spiritual sense, and this is where the name Bastet Blessings stems from. Bastet was the Egyptian Goddess of protection; among other things, I want my clients to know that any time they sit my chair, they are in a safe space where I will pour nothing but love, light, and good intentions into your crown, it’s my way of helping them lift it up and straighten it.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The beauty industry, especially the black beauty industry is a billion-dollar industry that I don’t see slowing down any time soon. Social media has a major role in the growth that the industry has gone through and has ultimately created new areas that people can get into. Beauty influencers are on the rise lately, and I can see that area of the industry skyrocketing in the next 5 years.
