Hi Carlos, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Not only is San Diego the city in which I was born, it has been and remains the city in which I’ve lived my entire life. Throughout my life, I’ve seen and experienced many amazing places, but to me, San Diego is and always will be where my heart is. Coming from a family of roofers and being a roofer through college, the decision to begin my first roofing venture came easy. After tough economic times in the family, my prior business partner (my Father) and I decided to get to work on developing something that had been his lifelong goal, which was after 25 years in the industry, to own a roofing company. Working roofs during the day and developing business plans with the help of my community at Cal State San Marcos at night came to be my daily routine through my senior year as a Business Administration student and now developing entrepreneur. Everything was put into place and we launched February 13, 2014. During the next eight years came what I consider to be my true business schooling.
During these years, I had the prívelage of overseeing the entire process from acquiring new customers to client services/sale along with what I consider the most gratifying part of my career which is personally guaranteeing the finalization of completed residential and commercial roofing projects throughout San Diego and San Diego County. Over the years, various new growth opportunities resulted in strategic partnerships which developed throughout California to the extent of multi-millions of dollars in sales. After finalizing my final commercial roofing deal with my prior venture, I decided it was time to come back home and focus on the reason I fell in love with the field to begin with, to me being a contractor in San Diego has turned into a lifestyle, as it is also the city in which I’ve lived during my entire life I now get to re-experience San Diego through new eyes on this journey as a contractor and business owner. I established my new office location in Del Mar, CA. and completed all prior steps to launching what is now my single focus within my career. Higher Levels Roofing is owned independently by me, Carlos Gomez. Higher Levels Roofing is a joining of my life and works experience to ensure my clients can rest easy throughout the entire roofing process. With my teams of highly experienced installers, industry-leading lifetime material warranty, and personal commitment to delivering a superior service, we are San Diego’s Roofing Company.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Coming from a migrant family, I can say I was blessed with the opportunity of seeing many things in this world alongside my immediate family. Even though my family has always been extremely supportive of everything I’ve been able to accomplish both educationally and laborally. Everything from attending and graduating college, starting a business and forwardly every step required to scaling a business was 100 percent new to me. It required a level of self-discipline which I only realized I obtained when it was necessary to be able to successfully establish a proper understanding of the requirements to run and company. I have always focused on a brand first business approach which has led to a pace of doing business where I am not allowing fear to be a factor while maintaining a healthy level of caution.

How do you define success?
Success, Have you ever heard a song which makes you ready to bet it all? Have you ever seen a movie or read a really good book about going to war?
You know that mentality in which you know there is a very high chance you might not come back from this alive. This is something you have accepted. It is no longer a fear. The thought of dying is simply irrelevant. You have prepared for this, this is no longer a question of life and death. This right here, right now, this moment, is life and you are going to do everything possible to ensure that you continue to live.
This, to me, is a very similar process, but different in two very key ways; to begin I know that I am never coming back from this, either dead or alive, this is me. Jay Z said it best, “I am not a businessman, I am a business, man.” and this is not a question of if I am going to come back alive. This was a decision that I am no longer ok with living without following my dream. This vision, this dream, this goal, this moment, the key is make them all be one. This moment is really all I have.
Economic gains to me are not a definition of success, I state that these things are not, and have never been, my goal. I know it sounds cliche the whole “I’m not in it for the money” statement. Allow me to put this into my own terms instead. As an entrepreneur my entire adult life I have chosen that the only person who can determine my level of success is me. We can now go back to the mentality which it requires. I am ready to sacrifice absolutely everything for this with one condition. As long as I truly believe that what I am doing is not causing harm to either me or anyone else, then every other thing is fair play. Everything that you consider the goal I am willing to play at every given moment if it means I am working on my dream. The ability to successfully continue to not only enjoy but also appreciate what I do, how I do it, and where I do it every day, to me that is success.
