Inspiring Conversations with Dana Yee of Lotus and Park Legal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Yee.

Hi Dana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was growing up, I didn’t know any attorneys in real life, but the ones that I saw on the “big screen” became my inspiration. It seemed like an interesting and rewarding career path, so it became my goal to become an attorney one day.

When I began my undergraduate education at the University of San Diego (USD), I remember a conversation that I had with an alumni volunteer on freshmen move-in day and telling her that I wanted to go to law school. She chuckled and thought I would end up changing my mind, but I was steadfast and went on to complete both my law degree and a Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.) at the University of San Diego School of Law. While law school didn’t turn out to be like Legally Blonde, it gave me the foundation to be able to open up my own practice. I spent many hours interning at USD’s legal clinics providing pro-bono legal services to low-income individuals and gained invaluable experience working on cases and directly with clients. After passing the bar exam and working at several law firms in San Diego, I decided to open up my own practice and Lotus and Park Legal was born in 2023!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not! I haven’t been immune to imposter syndrome and I was even pleasantly surprised to have been asked to be featured in this article. I’ve had to get out of my comfort zone and go out into the community to build a network and meet clients. I made a conscious decision to grow my business organically, so instead of doing any paid advertising, I have met all of my clients directly or through referrals. That decision has meant that there are times when business is slow, which can be scary, but I’ve been happy with how aligned I’ve been with all of my clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lotus and Park Legal?
I work with individuals to navigate the every day challenges of starting and running their businesses and nonprofits. That includes everything from incorporating their businesses/nonprofits as legal entities, drafting/reviewing contracts, obtaining tax-exempt status, and resolving any issues with the various federal and state taxing agencies. I work with a range of clients, but I am passionate about helping other female entrepreneurs and empowering them.

I strive to be the type of attorney that I would want to work with. To me, that means being kind, courteous, down to earth, and communicative. My consults are always complimentary. Because I operate remotely, I have lower overhead costs, meaning I don’t pass on things like office rent onto my clients. Many of my services are offered on a flat fee basis, so you know what your costs will be upfront and aren’t surprised by a final invoice. Additionally, I try to make our time working together as easy and stress free as possible for you– whether that means we do everything over the phone/email, or I come to your office to grab a signature rather than you having to take time from seeing clients, etc. to come to me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is to live my life and run my business as intuitively as possible. There is always outside noise about what you should be doing or what everyone else is doing, but I try to make informed decisions that also feel right for me.
