Today we’d like to introduce you to Daneyel & Tommy Walker
Hi Daneyel & Tommy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Dream it. Make it. Enjoy it.
Our journey began with a simple idea: to create a space where people could gather, connect, and feel a sense of belonging to create good coffee, tea and damn good food!. Both Tommy and Daneyel grew up in underserved communities, they know how a strong community could uplift and empower individuals. I wanted to bring that same spirit to life through a coffee shop that would serve not just as a place to enjoy great coffee, but as a hub for community engagement and support. We started small, with just a handful of employees and a vision to create something meaningful. From the beginning, our focus was on quality—both in the products we offered and in the relationships we built. As we grew, so did our ambitions. We began hosting events and workshops that aligned with our mission of empowerment and education. From ‘AI with Tommy sessions to our ‘Shop the B.L.A.C SD’ events, we found ways to bring people together around shared interests and goals. Each event was a learning experience, helping us to refine our offerings and deepen our connection with the community. One of the most pivotal moments in our journey was when we expanded our reach by making our cold brew and nitro cold brew available at various locations throughout San Diego. This move not only introduced our brand to new customers but also reinforced our commitment to making our products accessible while maintaining our community-driven values. Today, we’re proud of the space we’ve created—a place where people feel welcomed and valued, where they can learn, grow, and build lasting connections. Our story is still being written, and we’re excited to see where the journey takes us next. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received along the way and look forward to continuing to serve and uplift our community in the years to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Financial Challenges: Maintaining a small business, especially one focused on community rather than just profit, can be financially challenging. Balancing the need to keep prices accessible while covering operational costs and ensuring fair wages for staff is often a struggle.
Building Community Trust: Gaining the trust and support of the local community takes time and effort. It’s not always easy to convince people that your coffee shop is more than just a business, but a space that genuinely cares about and supports the community.
Competition: Competing with larger, well-established coffee chains that have more resources can be tough. Differentiating the coffee shop through unique offerings, events, and community focus requires consistent effort and creativity.
Event and Collaboration Planning: Organizing community events, workshops, and collaborations often involves coordinating with multiple parties, which can be logistically challenging. Ensuring that events are well-attended and impactful adds another layer of complexity.
Staffing: Finding and retaining staff who share the same passion for community-driven initiatives can be difficult. The coffee shop needs employees who are not only skilled baristas but also enthusiastic about contributing to the community.
Adapting to Change: The needs and interests of the community can change over time, requiring the coffee shop to adapt its offerings and events. Keeping up with these changes while staying true to the original mission can be challenging.
Time Management: Balancing the demands of running the day-to-day operations of the coffee shop with the additional responsibilities of community engagement and event planning can be overwhelming..
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At our community-driven coffee shop, we’re more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee—we’re a hub for connection, creativity, and community growth. Located in the heart of the Promise Zone in southeast San Diego, our goal is to provide a welcoming space where people can come together, share ideas, and support each other.
What We Do
We specialize in serving high-quality coffee, tea, and specialty beverages, crafted with care and a deep appreciation for the art of brewing. But our offerings go beyond the menu. We host a variety of community events, workshops, and initiatives designed to empower, educate, and uplift those around us.
What Sets Us Apart
Our commitment to the community is what truly sets us apart. We’re known for being a place where local entrepreneurs, artists, and residents can collaborate, share their work, and build connections. We actively seek out ways to support local businesses and artisans, whether through partnerships, vendor events, or by sourcing our ingredients from nearby producers.
What We’re Most Proud Of
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of our role as a catalyst for positive change in our community. We’ve become known not just for our coffee, but for our dedication to creating opportunities for growth and connection. Whether it’s through our ‘Shop the B.L.A.C SD’ events, our empowerment initiatives, or our AI workshops, we strive to make a meaningful impact every day.
