Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Kirkemo
Hi Dawn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I discovered my love of interior design when I had the opportunity to remodel my own home. That sparked my desire to attend Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach, CA. I worked at a design firm in the South Bay LA area and when my family moved to San Diego I decided it was time to go out on my own. I love working with clients through the creative process of designing a home and I am dedicated to listening to their vision, and creating stylish, functional spaces that are a true reflection of their personality. Prior to launching my career in design, I worked in Corporate Hospitality and Travel Management, which equipped me with a strong eye for detail and a deep understanding of how to create seamless experiences for clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The design work itself has been coming along quite naturally. The real challenge is in crafting a compelling and authentic brand presence online.
I’m intentionally taking the time to define exactly how I want to present myself to potential clients. This isn’t just about pretty pictures; it’s about clearly communicating my unique design perspective, expertise, and the value I bring to each project. I’m confident that by thoughtfully building my social media and brand, I’m establishing a strong foundation to attract the right clients and showcase the exceptional work I’m capable of delivering.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about FirstLight Interior Design?
I offer in-person interior design services to San Diego area and offer anywhere from a simple consultation room refresh to full project management. To anyone outside the San Diego I also offer virtual design services. For virtual services I can still offer a lot of options and assist you through a variety of projects. I want interior design to feel accessible to everyone and that you are working with a good friend. One thing I stress when talking to clients is that design needs to be functional first and foremost. Just because there is a hot new trend doesn’t mean it’s a good fit for your lifestyle. I love to maximize a home’s potential through space planning and finding little nooks for extra storage or unexpected hang out areas. At the end of the day I want your home to make you happy.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Our world as interior designers is definitely tied to real estate. When the housing market is booming, we see a ton of work helping people stage and sell homes – it’s a busy time!
But it’s interesting because when things slow down in real estate, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re quiet. Instead, people often decide to stay put and finally get around to updating their own spaces. So, while the type of work might change a bit, there’s usually still a demand for our skills. It’s kind of a built-in balance!
