Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jen Nelson.
Hi Dr. Nelson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like most chiropractors, I was an avid athlete who experienced many injuries and had lackluster rehabilitation and returned to sports care.
My original goal was physical therapy, but after a series of mentorships, chiropractic was going to give me the opportunity to help people improve their lives in all aspects of health. After graduating with my B.A. in Biology from San Diego State University, I attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, West Campus. While in school, I attempted to network heavily with local professionals, involve myself in extracurricular education, and strive to take on leadership positions.
After school, I opened my own practice inside Apiros with my colleague Austin Einhorn, working with college and professional athletes. Following my first practice, I was recruited to manage a satellite facility for Google in a local CrossFit gym in San Jose, CA.
After two years, we decided to move to San Diego to start a family. I was lucky enough to buy a practice in East San Diego, and we transitioned to La Mesa, CA, where we landed inside Rehab United. Maverick Chiropractic Clinic was born and developed inside Rehab United to serve law enforcement and veterans in San Diego.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have come to learn that anything worth having takes ambition, perseverance, and calculated risk. Every entrepreneur who has started from scratch will tell you there are more obstacles than successes, and that is quite possibly the thing that sets us apart from the rest: what we do with those obstacles.
Maverick Chiropractic Clinic has experienced 3 location changes in 3 different cities, changes in the patient base from the general population to law enforcement and military, and a transition from a cash practice to a mixed insurance/cash practice in 2020. With each obstacle presented, we learned and grew and continue to serve our community with the best care in San Diego.
As you know, we’re big fans of Maverick Chiropractic Clinic. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Maverick Chiropractic Clinic is an innovative chiropractic clinic that utilizes biomechanical assessments and active treatment plans to get our patients feeling better and moving better. We have integrated functional counseling to assist in our mission to optimize our patients’ health internally and externally.
We don’t use passive therapies, we build our treatment plans off the current best known science and practices, we are constantly looking to enhance our patient experience so our patients can quickly move through their treatments plans and have the tools necessary to continue improving beyond our care plans. I think what sets us apart the most is that our patients feel like we care about them as human beings.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I am not naturally a risk-taker, but some may disagree as I started my chiropractic practice right out of school. I am naturally introverted and prefer one-on-one interactions, but there were many occasions when I was required to stand in front of a crowd and speak about my profession and philosophy.
As I moved through 7 years of practice and two associates, I have found risk-taking to be an absolutely necessary skill set. I’ve learned to put myself in rooms where I felt intimidated, sell my skillsets to people I met, talk about my passion for helping people, and intelligently invest in gaining new skills and in business growth.
If it feels exhilarating, make an action plan and then jump into it head first. On the other hand, I learned to ask for trusted mentors for help with difficult decisions and learn to listen to my gut and use the data to determine if the next big risk was worthwhile.
