Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Coyle
Hi Dustin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My wife and I moved to San Diego just over four years ago. We lived in Salt Lake City before that, and that’s where I grew up. We moved to San Diego because we were tired of the hot summers and the really cold winters in Utah.
I am an Anesthesiologist. I worked most of my career at the University of Utah Medical Center. When we moved to San Diego, I started working in private practice at various hospitals in North County, and the Temecula area. Also during this time, I started my ketamine and IV nutrition clinic, Pacific KLN Infusions, with my business partner. We started out in a very small office in Escondido. As our business has grown, we moved into a bigger office space in San Marcos. We are still a very small clinic, which makes our office cozy and comfortable. We do mostly ketamine infusions for people that have health conditions such as severe depression, anxiety, PTSD,, and OCD. We also do ketamine infusions for people that have chronic pain conditions. In addition to ketamine infusions, We also do lidocaine infusions for people who have chronic pain. Another part of our business is doing various nutritional and vitamin infusions, for people who want to improve their overall health. We have three anesthesia providers, including myself, who do all of the infusions. This makes us uniquely qualified to give these medications and infusions, and safely monitor patients who are undergoing treatment, and handle any complications that could arise. My business partner and I strongly believe in practicing evidence based medicine, so the protocols we use for our infusions are based on what is strongly supported in the medical literature.
While I no longer do hospital-based anesthesia, I do mobile anesthesia around San Diego, at various dental offices, for children having dental procedures. I have all of my own anesthesia equipment that I carry to these offices. Most of these kids are from underserved populations, from families that have lower income levels.
I really enjoy both of the aspects of my career. I feel like I am contributing to a positive impact on the lives of my patients. Both aspects also allow me to be my own boss, and be innovative and creative, which appeals to my entrepreneurial side.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles with Pacific KLN Infusions has been growth. We started this clinic right after the beginning of COVID. So, like many businesses, we struggled to stay afloat.
Our ongoing struggles with the clinic revolve around the fact that ketamine treatment is not covered by health insurance. Patients have to pay for the infusions themselves. This severely limits, patient access to these treatments. Like many ketamine clinics and providers, we strongly advocate for health insurance to cover ketamine infusion therapy. This makes it very difficult to grow our clinic and expand our services.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pacific KLN Infusions?
Pacific KLN Infusions is a ketamine and nutritional infusions clinic, in San Marcos, specializing in helping people with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD,, and various chronic pain conditions, we also help people who just want overall better wellness.
We offer ketamine, lidocaine, and nutritional infusions. That’s what the KLN part stands for. We specialize in individualized care of our patients, with expert service and safety. Because all our providers are anesthesia trained, we have particular knowledge and expertise in the use of these medications, monitoring patients, and treating potential side effects, reactions, and emergency situations, should any arise. Many other clinics are run by nurses or non-anesthesiologist physicians.
We also pride ourselves in being evidenced-based in our treatment protocols. We follow what is in the current medical literature. Many clinics do not adhere to these evidence-based protocols.
Because our services are self-pay, and not covered by health insurance, we aim to keep our prices competitive for the industry and area. Often, we are priced lower than our competitors. We want to make our services as accessible to as many people, who need them, as possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would say I have had a lot of good luck in my career, being at the right place at the right time. I have been lucky to connect with a lot of individuals who have helped make my career a success.
One of these people is my business partner for Pacific KLN Infusions, Rob Knipper. He is a phenomenal nurse anesthetist, and has done a fantastic job managing the day-to-day operations of the clinic. He is great with patients, and easy to work with.
Another such individual is Dr. Richard Katz of Bay Area Mobile Anesthesia. He got me started in doing my mobile anesthesia business, and was my mentor. He and I were acquaintances in another anesthesia group, and I found out that he did the mobile pediatric dental anesthesia work.
