Inspiring Conversations with Hazael Garay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazael Garay.

Hi Hazael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an east coast transplant! I have lived on the east coast all my life and after much prayer and reflection my husband and I sold our home, left the church we planted in someone’s loving care, and headed west. We arrived 3 1/2 years ago with very little knowledge of San Diego and a heart full of faith and adventure. We have both always been involved in our communities in ministry and service, so we were eager to jump in right away with our next phase of traveling to the nations and preaching the gospel. We began to visit churches in order to get to know different pastors and faith communities and then 2020 happened. This caused us both to slow down and really press into what our next would be. One day right before Covid shut our nation down we were in Pakistan uncertain if we were going to be able to leave. Once we arrived in SD, we knew that we had to do something for the poor villages that had no clean, potable water. We began to knock on doors and were able to collect enough to build 6-7 water pumps in remote villages during the pandemic. At the same time, I knew I had to find work and for a very long time, I had wanted to have a thriving business that would allow me to give to others in need. My family has always been in real estate, and I had a desire and passion to help others achieve home ownership. One thing led to another, and today I am a real estate agent with Keller Williams and my team is Kimo Quance Group. My favorite part of my career is to hand over the keys to a new homeowner. It’s such a major achievement and investment for them and to be trusted with that is both humbling and satisfying.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because I was a full-time minister since the age of 21, when I stepped into our office for the first time, I really did feel like a fish out of water. The Kimo Quance Group is in the top 1% in all of Southern California and for me to hold a place on that team meant I had to learn and learn quickly. At first, it seemed daunting. I had two or three pivotal moments where I had to decide, I’m either going to sink or swim. One was that I came in faithfully every day, made phone calls, reached out to people, and saw no paycheck. I needed to dig deep within myself and give myself the time to grow and be patient. Second, when you’re in sales you have to learn to deal with rejection. I learned quickly that I had to handle rejection by not taking anything personally, and definitely not by crying. Yes, I cried a few tears in the beginning. I learned if I wanted to win, I would have to get over rejection at the speed of lightning. Third, when my confidence was shaken because of not knowing what I was doing, or being rejected, or not seeing a paycheck, I had to talk to myself and make some declarations about my future self and success. I surrounded myself with people who spoke positivity and faith into my life as well. Today, I don’t look at the news concerning the economy because my focus are the clients that I’m helping every day. I have the confidence and knowledge that I can and will help them on their home-buying or selling journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of Realtor/Author. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a realtor with Keller Williams, and I work with an amazing team, The Kimo Quance Group. Keller Williams is an amazing brokerage with a strong value system, one of them being giving back to the community. This aligns perfectly with my goals and values. Because of my background as a minister, I enjoy working with everyone! I offer patience with the process because I know that all that come to me to buy a home or sell it, may not be ready at that moment. The first thing we do is sit down and talk about my client’s goals and visions. This gives me a deeper level of understanding of their needs, and it truly does help me find the perfect home and winning solution for them. I decided very early on in my career that I would go way out of my way to for my clients by offering value, honesty, integrity, passion, and good old hard work. I assure all of my clients that my main objective is to serve them and negotiate the best deals on their behalf. Y tambien HABLO ESPANOL. I love to help my Latino families get a piece of their American dream and it feels soooo good!

What matters most to you? Why?
Service. To me, when you serve others and put them first, everything else will fall into its proper place and good things come from it. Every time.
