Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Corney. She shares her story with us below:
Jackie is the Founder of Moxie Tales, a fashion + storytelling company conceived in 2019 and birthed in 2020. Jackie is a wife and mom of 4 children. Prior to Moxie Tales, Jackie was a chauffeur to high-end clients in North San Diego County, an ombudsman with San Diego County Health and Human Services, an early employee at a San Diego fashion startup, and had a career on Wall Street in numerous roles.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Heck no! The name Moxie Tales was actually conceived in 2019 shortly after meeting with Ryan Berman, author of Return on Courage. As strange as it sounds, I had the name before the actual business. I had this really big vision and was literally all over the place…my brain and ideas were like confetti pieces floating around in the middle of a parade. Ryan helped me get the pieces together, so I had a starting point. He said, “The kite is flying you; you are not flying the kite.”

I spent the next 6 months manifesting my “big idea” and filed for the trademark on 12/31/19. My driving business died on 3/8/20, and I immediately buried it. I had started that business in 2015 and absolutely loved it, but with the future of travel unclear, I decided not to hold on to hope. With the help of my friend and business coach Laura Buelke, I was able to define my business, create a mission statement, and prove to the USPTO that Moxie Tales was worthy of a trademark. My close friends and family asked me why I was trademarking my business name and thought I was bonkers, but I have listened to endless entrepreneurs who had to settle for a brand name after their success had come. Most of my struggles after that had to do with technology…I am not savvy at all, so I struggle daily with even basic functions of my website.

As you know, we’re big fans of Moxie Tales. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Mission Statement: Moxie Tales, a fashion storytelling company, was founded in 2019 to combine my lifelong passions for connection, storytelling, fashion, change & purpose. Through a series of interesting events that occurred between 2017-2019 personally and professionally, I found myself in the midst of fashion, copywriting, charitable organizations, family addiction recovery, and storytelling. These seismic, life-altering events led me to pursue my true purpose.

I believe that every day when you get dressed, you are telling a story. What story are you currently telling? What story do you want to tell? Most importantly, are you open, vulnerable, and ready to tell your new story?

Moxie Tales’ company mission is to help you tell, build, and deliver moxie to YOUR story. Our growing collection of carefully curated accessories were handpicked and designed with YOU in mind.

“Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!”

Ms. Frizzle, The Magic School Bus

During the pandemic, I met customers in parking lots and driveways so they could shop when everyone else was closed. While I am an online boutique, I will travel a reasonable distance for serious shoppers. If a client wants to shop at 6 am before work, I will make that happen. Many of my current clients are business executives with very busy schedules, and I do my very best to work around their schedules.

I have a blog on my website…while I have a few posts about fashion and jewelry, I have mostly written about current events, mental health, and people making a difference in the world. I have fallen behind and have also had some writer’s block, but the blog posts I have on the website will tell you a lot about who I am and what I care about.

I would not consider myself a stylist but absolutely LOVE helping women get ready for special events. I have very strong opinions and am not afraid to share them when asked.

The Moxie Tales Boutique specializes in vintage one-of-a-kind STATEMENT jewelry, STEFKA NYC handbags, Jennafer Grace Leisurewear, and rancher hats.

What sets you apart from others?
My “why” and my blog, which all connect back to mental health.

My trademark and focus on my why.

I absolutely love helping women look and feel their very best, wherever they are in life. Statement jewelry literally starts conversations. You can walk into a room without saying a word, and the right people (your people) will find you. Moxie Tales is an online boutique, so you can shop 24/7, email questions, set up appointments, etc… from the comfort of your home.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I will tell a little story here…Back in 2019, I was driving a high-profile client to his private jet at Palomar Airport…there was a bit of confusion about where we were meeting the jet. We made an extra turn, and then I said, “Straight ahead”? His answer was “go forward,” as going straight ahead on a slightly windy road would have caused a head-on collision. That was one of the most profound statements that has really stuck with me over the years.

The most important lesson I have learned on this journey is that the road is NEVER straight and rarely easy, but to keep moving forward, no matter what.
