Inspiring Conversations with Jacob Hapgood of Scoot n Scoop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Hapgood

Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, I’ve been captivated by the idea of entrepreneurship. The freedom to carve my own path, the exhilaration of building something from the ground up, and the sense of accountability that comes with knowing success or failure lies in my hands have always been deeply motivating. Over the past five years, I’ve explored a variety of ventures—freelance online marketing, window cleaning, and other home service businesses. Each endeavor taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of a well-executed plan. These experiences, both rewarding and challenging, set the stage for what would become my most exciting venture yet.
The inspiration for Scoot n Scoop, a dog waste removal company, came about unexpectedly during a brainstorming session with my roommate and lifelong friend. We were tossing around ideas for home service businesses, a sector that thrives in San Diego County—one of the wealthiest and most competitive areas in the nation. While many home services have become oversaturated over the years, we noticed a surprising gap in one particular niche: dog waste removal. It’s a household chore that almost everyone dreads—gross, endless, and often the subject of many family disagreements. The lightbulb moment struck. Here was an industry ripe for innovation and customer-focused service.
By mid-November 2024, the idea took root. We decided to turn our casual conversation into a structured plan. Recognizing the potential to offer a much-needed service in an underserved market, we mapped out a clear schedule, setting deadlines for key milestones. With limited financial resources, we knew we’d have to handle every aspect of the business ourselves—from branding to legal paperwork—but we were determined to make it work.
The following weeks were a whirlwind of activity. We conducted extensive research into the legal requirements for starting a business in California, pooling our savings to file for an LLC, choose a DBA, obtain an EIN, and open a business bank account. Branding became a central focus of our early efforts. We wanted to create a memorable identity that resonated with dog owners across North County San Diego. After countless hours of brainstorming, sketching, and refining, we developed our logo: a cheerful dog holding a shovel. This image became the cornerstone of our brand, embodying our mission to deliver friendly, reliable, and efficient service.
With our branding in place, we turned our attention to marketing. We designed flyers, business cards, and an engaging website to connect with potential customers. Working through the holiday season, we completed the bulk of the groundwork just in time for Christmas. By New Year’s Day 2025, Scoot n Scoop was officially launched.
The first month of business has been a hustle. To spread the word, we’ve posted flyers in specialty dog stores, veterinary offices, and community parks across the region. Social media has become a key pillar of our outreach strategy, with consistent posts on platforms like Instagram and Facebook showcasing our services and engaging with local dog lovers. In addition, we’ve started running targeted ads on Google and Facebook to broaden our reach.
January ended on a high note: we signed our first customer and have seen a growing number of inquiries each week. While our business is still in its infancy, we’re confident that our commitment to quality service and customer satisfaction will drive growth in the months and years to come. Building a positive reputation and generating word-of-mouth referrals are top priorities for us, and we’re dedicated to maintaining the trust of our customers as we expand.
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to continue growing Scoot n Scoop and establishing ourselves as the premier pooper scooper provider for dog owners throughout San Diego. Our journey is just beginning, but we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and excited for what lies ahead. Remember the name Scoot n Scoop—it won’t be long before it’s synonymous with clean yards and happy dogs across the county.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting Scoot n Scoop was not without its hurdles. Limited resources forced us to take on every aspect of the business ourselves, from designing a logo and building a website to completing all the legal paperwork required to establish our company. The learning curve was steep, and balancing these responsibilities with everyday life added to the pressure. Navigating the legal requirements, including filing for an LLC and creating a brand from scratch, was particularly challenging without professional guidance. Moreover, working tirelessly through the holiday season, when time and energy were already stretched thin, tested our determination and resilience. These obstacles, though daunting, shaped the foundation of our company and strengthened our commitment to its success.

As you know, we’re big fans of Scoot n Scoop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are dedicated to making life easier for pet owners by keeping their yards clean and mess-free. We specialize in providing reliable, friendly, and efficient poop-scooping services, addressing a household chore that many people dread. What sets us apart is our commitment to professionalism, customer satisfaction, and building a trusted brand in a niche industry that is often overlooked.
Our service is designed to meet a variety of needs, depending on each customer’s circumstances. For busy professionals, we provide a valuable time-saving solution, allowing them to focus on work and family without the hassle of constant yard cleanup. For elderly and disabled individuals, our service ensures a clean outdoor space without the risk of strain or injury that might come from handling the task themselves. Whether it’s a matter of convenience or necessity, we offer a reliable solution that enhances the quality of life for pet owners across San Diego.
Our goal is to become the go-to pooper scooper service for all dog lovers in the region. Through consistent marketing, strong word-of-mouth referrals, and a dedication to quality, we are growing our presence and making Scoot n Scoop a recognizable name in pet care. Whether through our thorough waste removal services, our strong community engagement, or our customer-first approach, we are excited to continue expanding and making a difference for dog owners across San Diego.
We are currently running a promotion that gives San Diego dog owners an opportunity to try our service for free, with no strings attached, so they can experience firsthand the convenience we offer our clients and provide us a chance to improve our business. For a limited time Scoot n Scoop is offering 2 weeks of service, absolutely free and with no expectation of signing up, the only thing we are asking in return is for honest feedback so we can improve our service and a 5-star review on Google if they are satisfied.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My business partner and I come from entrepreneurial families, where the principles of hard work, resilience, and customer-focused service were ingrained in us from an early age. Our parents, all successful business owners in the San Diego area, have been invaluable mentors, offering insights and guidance that can only be gained through decades of firsthand experience. One of the most important lessons they’ve taught us is that strong customer relationships are the foundation of any thriving business. Viewing our company through a customer-first lens has shaped our approach, ensuring that we prioritize reliability, trust, and exceptional service.
For those who may not have the benefit of personal mentors, we’ve found a wealth of knowledge in digital resources. YouTube videos, online forums, and social media pages can be incredibly educational, providing insights from seasoned entrepreneurs. While there is a mix of valuable and less useful information, those willing to sift through the content can uncover practical strategies and real-world lessons that can help them navigate their own entrepreneurial journeys. Success in business is about continuous learning, and in today’s digital age, high-quality guidance is more accessible than ever.
