Inspiring Conversations with James Williamson of Wejellyfish LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Williamson

Hi James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Jellyfish started as just an idea at Penn State in 2017, sparked by a simple question: What makes some nights better than others? While studying quantitative data and analytics, I developed a theorem—“The Equation to a Good Time”—a way to quantify and optimize social experiences. But the real aha moment came at Champs, one of the nation’s top college and sports bars. That’s where the vision clicked: What if we could use live data to organize and optimize real-time decision-making?

From that moment, the concept evolved into Jellyfish—The Social App. Unlike anything before it, Jellyfish replaces outdated static reviews with real-time, data-driven recommendations. By leveraging occupancy insights, AI, and live user input, we’re creating a smarter way to navigate social life, dining, events, and beyond.

As we’ve grown, so has our vision. Jellyfish isn’t just about finding the best places—it’s about connecting with the right people and experiences in real time. We’ve built a social app that lets you add friends, share stories, and get live updates on what’s happening around town. Whether it’s a packed rooftop bar, a hidden speakeasy, or a quiet lounge, Jellyfish blends the social areas of our lives that truly matter—so you never have to miss out.

Now, after years of refining the vision, we’re ready to come to market—and there’s no better place to start than San Diego. After living here for eight years and being from Southern California, this city isn’t just where we’re launching; it’s home. Jellyfish is a real local company, built around our community and designed to make going out better, easier, and more exciting. San Diego is the perfect launchpad for Jellyfish. We’re building the right team, securing strategic investment, and preparing to take over the city—and soon, beyond.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Jellyfish has been years in the making—a journey filled with challenges, late nights, and relentless determination. This is our third attempt at building the right team and bringing this vision to life. Along the way, we’ve worked with five developers and had more than 25 people contribute to its evolution. Every setback became a lesson, every obstacle a stepping stone.

But now, we’re here. The pieces have come together, the foundation is set, and Jellyfish is finally ready to launch. This isn’t just an idea anymore—it’s a reality. The wait is over, and the future of going out starts now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Jellyfish isn’t just an app—we want to complete change how people socialize. We take the guesswork out of going out by providing, data-driven recommendations based on occupancy, user activity, and live insights. No more outdated reviews or scrolling through endless options—Jellyfish tells you where the energy is, right now.

But we’re more than just a discovery tool. Jellyfish brings your social life together in one place—add friends, see their stories, and stay updated on what’s happening around town at a glance. Whether you’re looking for a packed spot or empty one Jellyfish helps you make the right move, in the moment.

What makes us different? Our focus on occupancy—seeing, in real-time, how many people are at each location. No company has ever built a platform like this for a specific industry and we’re exited to be the first. While others rely on outdated reviews and scattered opinions, Jellyfish gives you live, dynamic insights that reflect what’s happening right now. And we’re starting where it matters most—San Diego.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never give up. Keep going, keep pushing, and keep believing in yourself—no matter the odds. The journey of building Jellyfish has been anything but easy. There have been challenges, setbacks, and moments where the finish line felt out of reach. But every obstacle became a lesson, every setback an opportunity to grow.

Success isn’t about having a perfect plan—it’s about resilience, and the unwavering belief that what you’re building matters. The biggest breakthroughs come from those who refuse to quit. And that’s exactly why we’re here today.
