Inspiring Conversations with Katherine Whittaker of Indie Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Whittaker.

Hi Katherine, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Indie Interiors & Co is a partnership of great friends who happen to love what they do. Leslie had her own design business and was hired by Kat to finish some details on her own home. Together, they had so much fun designing Kat’s house, and they quickly found they were a perfect pair- even completing each other’s sentences and always pushing the envelope on design. After Leslie hired Kat to come work for her full-time, they continued to build their friendship and future business plans. The collaboration was too good to pass up, and Kat and Leslie became business partners in 2022 launching Indie Interiors & Co. and haven’t looked back since! With 25+ renovations under their belts, they are constantly working to create beautiful, functional, and timeless spaces their clients love!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
With construction, there are always obstacles that come up-, and Indie has definitely had their fair share! Kat and Leslie have learned a lot in the past several years- all information they take with them and use to improve their services. They feel as though they are good at taking on challenges and quickly resolving issues in a communicative and straightforward way. At Indie, they find the better they plan and prepare, the more smoothly the renovation goes. It was important to them to streamline their business to be anticipatory and proactive to eliminate as many problems as possible.

As you know, we’re big fans of Indie Interiors & Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Indie Interiors & Co. is a design studio that specializes in designing whole home renovations. They are involved in the very beginning with space planning and layout all the way to the very last decor detail of the finished project. Kat and Leslie have a unique design esthetic, both derived from childhoods spent outdoors continents apart. They love to bring the outside in with organic elements, natural stones, and neutral colors. When they design spaces, they focus on every single detail, making sure nothing is overlooked. The overall goal is to create something that will stand the test of time and be just as lovely down the road as trends change. While Indie does have a specific design style, Kat and Leslie don’t want to rinse and repeat their projects. It is really important to them to infuse the clients’ personalities and taste into the design. From the initial meetings to the kickstarter to the design selections– every step of the way is all about elevating the style concept, maximizing space and storage, creating a functional layout and finding moments for wow factors, and allowing the rest of the design to support that.

At Indie, the client will know what to expect right from the beginning–the design process is streamlined into an 8–12-week schedule (depending on the scope), starting with a questionnaire and finishing with a design doc binder created for the contractor with all the specs, selections and notes. All selections, including furniture, will be selected during this 8–12-week time frame and then ordered after approval. Kat and Leslie will consult during construction and schedule an install day for the soft furnishings. The concept and overall vision comes to life once all the last finishing touches are in place.
