Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Herzing
Hi Kayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In high school, I decided the medical field was for me and chose nursing, due to wanting to help people and a bonus of the multiple career paths this career offers. I graduated with my RN, BSN degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in December 2021 and began practicing in what I thought would be my dream nursing job, as a labor & delivery nurse. However, I quickly realized the high stress, rapid-paced environment of this hospital setting was not what I imagined. I then began a journey of working in various outpatient settings instead, but a move to the San Diego, CA area in the spring of 2023 made me start really thinking about why I kept leaving different jobs that sounded great on paper, but ultimately always ended up leaving me feeling unfulfilled.
I had at that point become really interested in a more holistic way of living, and so I decided I wanted to dive more into that and how I could share that passion with others. I saw such a need for being a provider of this type of care, especially in the world of women’s health. Many of us have went through the motions of listing symptoms and either not being fully listened to or feeling cared about, or being prescribed a supposedly easy and quick fix, and then the problem we were experiencing is STILL unresolved – just covered up and usually causing other effects from the “convenient” fix. I wanted to be able to offer the guidance, time, and personalized connection that traditional doctors or healthcare professionals are often unable to provide.
After much research, I found the best fit for what I was looking for and started a program to become a nurse coach. This came with many hours of studying and practicing with peers, but also with volunteer practice clients, which I loved! It confirmed for me this is what I was truly meant to do. After the program ended, I took two separate exams to become an official holistic nurse and a nurse coach, which together gave me my current title of board certified health & wellness nurse coach (HWNC-BC).
Although I’m still a registered nurse and love caring for others, my passion is undoubtedly for 1:1 teaching and for promoting holistic and evidence-based care and preventative care for women. Every day I learn more and am able to learn more from my clients, so I never stop learning and growing myself. I love being able to help women work towards and achieve their health goals and be the best version of themselves for their own sake and for those who love them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always such a leap of faith deciding to go out on a limb to pursue something new, no matter what it might be. I’ve learned that it’s tough but also very rewarding to work on creating and nurturing my own business, and I’m blessed to have so much support from family, friends, and my fiance all along the way. For example, I spent months to design my own website, logo, and social media platforms, and am continuously working on networking to individuals but also many women’s groups in the area – I love being able to come talk to women and especially moms about prioritizing their health and wellness! I’m still working full-time as a nurse, so I currently run my business part-time, but since this is my true passion, I plan on someday making this my full-time career as it continues to blossom, especially as I get married and grow my own family in the near future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Living Garden Wellness, I am passionate about helping all women, especially those going through transitional stages of life such as career or life changes, the prenatal or postpartum period, or facing new diagnoses, achieve their highest level of wellness physically, mentally, and/or spiritually. Even if you just want to work on overall wellness with no specific problems or goals in mind, I can help!
As a board certified health & wellness nurse coach, I’ll guide you towards a healthier lifestyle by creating health goals and a curated plan unique to you and encouraging you all along the way. I believe that the journey towards health begins with 3 important factors – education, support, and personalized care – and I’m here to help you begin your journey to optimal wellness.
So you may be wondering, how does it all work? Although I also can be booked for events, classes, and small groups, all of my services for 1:1 coaching are offered virtually via phone call and video calls. The process starts with booking a free discovery phone call to see if it’s a good fit for us to work together. If so, and after reviewing pricing you want to move forward, an intake form will be completed, before our initial 2 hour virtual meeting. We will meet every other week via video call, and you will be given access to an online portal where you can do weekly check-ins with me and message me at anytime with questions or concerns. I will also be able to share documents/resources for you via this portal to make it all easy to access! Over the course of however many weeks we are working together, we will be working together towards your goals. These may change along our journey, which is totally okay and expected! My job will be to encourage you and provide you with resources, referrals, or whatever I am able to provide to help you make progress towards your own unique optimal wellness. On our final wrap up session, I will provide a summary of what we have achieved and tips on how to keep up with this progress in the future as you continue to grow on your health & wellness journey.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I chose the name of my business based on a quote I love from St. Thérèse of Lisieux, aka “The Little Flower”:
”I understood how all the flowers He has created are beautiful, how the splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away the perfume of the little violet or the delightful simplicity of the daisy. I understood that if all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wildflowers. And so it is in the world of souls, Jesus’ garden.”
I love this quote, as I think of all the women I work with as unique flowers of all colors and stages of growth with the potential to bloom and grow into who they were created to be. No one has the same story and that’s the best part – we were all created to contribute our own beauty to this world’s living garden. I want to be able to help YOU bloom into the best version of yourself!
A question I often get is: How are you different from a life coach, counselor, or therapist?
You’ll find that I will be understanding of your situation, past and present, but I will not give validation to habits or lifestyles that are not helping you live your healthiest life and that are able to be improved. I want you to be “unstuck” and able to live life to its fullest! I give feedback and helpful materials with a background of nursing knowledge and evidence to support the resources I provide to you – not just health info I pulled off of search engines online or based off of rumors of what might help.
Please check out my website for additional details on my work, FAQ’s, and to get in touch with me. I also appreciate any support by following my social media pages – thank you!
