Inspiring Conversations with Kelly Powers of Nourish and Kelly Powers, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Powers

Hi Kelly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story with food and nutrition started in a piazza in Florence, Italy in 2008. I studied abroad in undergrad, and as I watched Italians sip their cappuccinos and go about their day, my life changed. Before moving to Florence, I was on track to attend nursing school, however, the time I spent in Italy and around the Mediterranean sparked a desire to focus on food and preventive care. When I returned from Italy, I changed my degree to nutrition and dietetics.

I then moved to San Francisco where I completed my BS in dietetics. Before completing a dietetic internship (DI), I worked at a nutrition private practice in the city. There, I worked for a Peruvian dietitian who’s food and nutrition philosophy paralleled mine, and that of the Mediterranean. After two years, I returned to school to complete my DI and get a graduate certificate in dietetics. Once I became a dietitian, I worked at a residential eating disorder (ED) clinic in the Bay Area. At that time, I also worked with a small team to build software that analyzed users grocery shopping purchases. In time, the ED clinic was weighing on me and the start-up didn’t launch, so I moved to Rome to get a graduate degree in food studies–sustainable production and consumption. While in Rome, I fully immersed myself in Italian food culture, and again, fell in love with Italy and the Mediterranean.

When I returned, I started my private practice and launched a weekly meal plan program called Weeknight Dinners. I also worked as a private chef and kitchen manager for several families in the city. This year, I moved back home to San Diego where I launched Nourish, a healthy meal delivery company that offers organic, nutrient-rich, grab-and-go meals that align with the Mediterranean diet. My mission is to remove as many barriers as I can to help others eat well.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Things have not always been easy, but I’ve learned a lot along the way. As a solo entrepreneur, capital is always my biggest challenge. It was also hard for me to bring things to market as I began my career. Now, I know products and services will have many iterations, making it easier for me to launch them when they may not be “perfect.” I’m more confident now, and I allow myself to play and learn as I go, which is a lot of fun.

We’ve been impressed with Nourish and Kelly Powers, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nourish is a healthy meal delivery in San Diego designed by a culinary dietitian. Each week, I offer delicious Mediterranean-inspired meals and snacks that’ll leave you feeling good. Ingredients are local, seasonal, and organic and meals and snacks are packed with fiber, protein, and healthy fat to fuel your body throughout the day. All meals are balanced and complete, meaning they’ll aid in blood sugar regulation and keep you satiated for hours. Grab-and-go breakfasts, market salads or balanced plates, raw energy bites, and chocolate covered stuffed dates are on the menu each week.

At my nutrition private practice, I offer individuals, couples, and families personalized and realistic support that helps them reach their health and weight goals. I specialize in the Mediterranean diet, culinary nutrition, recipe development and meal planning, and sustainable behavior change. I help people find more ease and joy in cooking and eating–for life–so they can stop dieting for good.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a late bloomer with a handful of very close friends growing up. I also have a twin, who’s been my best friend for the majority of my life. I didn’t pick up sports until freshman year of high school, but I loved playing soccer, tennis, and softball once I got started.
