Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Rose.
Hi Kristy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my journey in the music industry right outside of college in 2012, freelancing for bands in primarily the reggae genre for photography and videography. A few years went by before I was approached to join a niche-market music publication titled Top Shelf Reggae, in which I happily accepted in order to exponentially grow my photojournalism portfolio and digital presence.
As years went by, the founder wanted to hang us his hat, but I wasn’t ready yet, opting to take over temporarily as ‘Managing Editor’ in his absence; it was only him and me hanging on to the publication at that point. At the helm, I did a total revamp of protocol: posting daily instead of sporadically, partnering with music labels and initiating ad space on the site. It wasn’t until a few years went by that I realized the founder was never to come back to his original position, so I changed my title to ‘Editor-in-Chief’ and did a full rebrand to Top Shelf Music — opening us up to a much wider media market.
By then, I had over 25 photojournalists nationwide and the number is at 51 now (with one in Toronto, Canada!). It’s been a wild ride, yet we are far from over, with several surprises up our sleeve through the end of this year and moving into 2022, now that I have a fully staffed executive team. If you don’t know Top Shelf Music yet, you invariably will soon enough!
With all of that, I have yet to monetize the brand to the point where we are all getting a decent salary from our efforts. Sadly, music media is the last to get paid for work. Thus, as of last month, I partnered with my Chief Marketing Officer of Top Shelf Music to create Noteworthy Public Relations — a digital approach to traditional music PR. After only three weeks of operation, we have indoctrinated eight clients onto the roster from across the United States, with more leads in the works! Tackling both sides of the music industry opens up innumerable possibilities moving forward, so I’m really excited.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most would probably say that COVID-19 has been the biggest obstacle for them in the music industry, yet I would disagree. If it wasn’t for that unexpected downtime, I wouldn’t have reorganized Top Shelf Music to the degree of efficiency it is now. I also wouldn’t have lost my service industry job, been searching for work to no avail coming out of quarantine only to get creative enough and determined enough to start my own company. It really was a blessing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Noteworthy Public Relations?
Noteworthy is a digital approach to traditional music public relations, offering multimedia solutions and reliable results without breaking the bank.
Welcoming musical artists, bands, vendors, podcasters, radio and television personalities, we boost client objectives in order to meet tangible and timely key results. We differ from other PR firms with not only an emphasis in marketing and branding (only 19% of public relations and communications companies contribute to marketing strategy!!), but further having Top Shelf Music, our own online music news source, in our back-pocket as guaranteed press coverage and playlist curation for our clients. Within three weeks of operation, we’ve garnered seven podcasts, three premieres and two articles for our eight existing clients — not too bad for a company launch! And, we are only going to grow our influence and network from here, so stay tuned.
Any big plans?
We are currently looking into sync licensing for our clients, encouraging them to prep their songs and private URLs ahead of time for launch. Event coordination and venue booking is also trickling down into our day-to-day operations, so we might have a well-rounded one-stop-shop for clients in future years. One step at a time, though.
