Inspiring Conversations with Lily Quan of Q Homes Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Quan

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Entrepreneurship and real estate runs in my blood through my dad who immigrated from Hong Kong. I was born in Chinatown, Los Angeles, where my dad worked in residential and commercial real estate, remodeling and selling properties. My childhood was a life of real estate adventures where I flourished picking up different languages as we moved from Hong Kong, to Taiwan where I watched my dad acquire land and develop and onto Santiago, Chile where Español was absorbed. My dad’s restlessness worked to my advantage. A career in real estate requires many different skill sets, serving people from all walks of life from around the world.

I received my Bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State, my Master’s degree from San Diego State University. For a few years out of college, I worked as a flight attendant at American Airlines and joined the Air National Guard, hoping to be a commercial pilot one day. While logging hours as a single-engine pilot, I went on adventures and met new people from all over the world. This helped shape me into the personable woman I am today.

They say the older you get, the more you become like your parents. This was the case for me, as I became a pro in real estate, just like my dad

Through a contact I had made in the Air National Guard, I became a corporate real estate agent where I gained confidence developing my skills in business, finance and new construction. After dedicating 15 years of my career in corporate real estate, I opened up my own brokerage firm.

In 2019, Q Homes officially opened its doors. While it was scary and challenging times, I found the endeavor exciting because I am a risk taker.

These days, I wear many hats to include finance placement and identifying the right properties for my clients. Most of my clients love newer construction, as do I. Today I broker myriad properties, from single-family, detached, attached, multifamily, high- rise, and midrise . One of my calling is serving the baby boomer generation (also known as the Greatest Generation) and generation X, who have more purchasing power than ever.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2008, I experienced my first major real estate downturn where even the most well-financed builders went out of business. My last builder consulting job overextended itself and closed its doors, leaving my employees laid off and resulting in unpaid consulting fees.

A major challenge in today’s market is real estate prices continue to rise along with interest rates. This real estate climate creates less purchasing power for my clients, especially in San Diego where the median home price is over $1M.

What I am seeing with this challenging housing market is that more are baby boomers helping out generation X to purchase a home. There is also more multigenerational living by adding more square footage in their homes in the form of an ADU ( Accessible Dwelling Unit). I love to create solutions to combine efforts by 2 generations.

If someone is over 62 and currently owns their home and wants to right size their home, I have a solution for this. Another challenge is salary is not rising in concert with cost of living. That challenge I do not know how to solve. In San Diego, the employment rate is healthy and more people desire to live here. That is a big plus for my business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are here to help you design your best lifestyle. If you can define it, we can be part of the solution. Having had experience in the design-build process, we can consult you on many facets of the real estate from finance, acquisition, entitlement to making it a home. We can help with exit strategies of your estate. Or if finding the perfect home in a master-planned community with parks and pool is on your vision board, this is also part of our wheelhouse. With over 800 new homes sold, I know I can help.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
While my business and life partner and I ride the waves of real estate through changing tides, we also love to ride snowboards, skateboards and surf with our identical twin boys.

I am involved with an inspiring women’s group called CREW (commercial real estate for women) served on their scholarship committee and CEO council. Q Homes is a supporter of AREAA (Asian Real Estate Association of America). As a 2nd generation ABC (American Born Chinese), I can appreciate how difficult it is to achieve homeownership. I love to champion women-owned, small businesses as much as possible. And as a veteran, I am here to serve them with my 2 decades of experience and knowledge. Recently, I supported my Long Beach state sorority, Sigma Phi Omega, an Asian interest group of smart and strong ladies where they lift each other in academics, social circles and give back via philanthropy and service. Being on the alumni panel gave me an opportunity to impart wisdom, reconnect with the sisterhood and help mentor them. It was full circle moment and I was inspired.
