Inspiring Conversations with Mark Mofid of Sylke, Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Mofid

Hi Mark, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
SYLKE® was born out of twenty years of my experience as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Throughout my career, I was never satisfied with the products available to protect post-operative surgical incisions. Every incision and every suture involves care, thought, and precision. Yet, there’s a significant gap in our industry regarding the aftercare of closed incisions. To achieve optimal surgical results, we must respect the entirety of the healing process. I approach each procedure holistically—surgery isn’t finished after the last suture; it’s complete only when the incision is healed and the body is whole again. Driven by this philosophy, I have continually innovated techniques and products to enhance surgical outcomes and patient safety. My extensive research into silk fibroin’s remarkable properties for cell regeneration has been a cornerstone of that work. During the early months of the pandemic, when my surgery schedule was lighter due to the ban on elective surgeries, I seized the opportunity to bring my vision of the ideal wound closure product to life. Upon studying the exceptional healing benefits, durability, and biocompatibility of silk fibroin, I realized that it would be the perfect material for a comfortable yet effective skin closure device.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The greatest challenge that we have had in bringing our product to market has been unfair competition in the marketplace, specifically tactics used by larger medical device companies to stifle better, safer and less expensive alternatives from gaining market share. In medicine, patients generally believe that safe and cost-effective health care is delivered when the best products are provided at the lowest price to health care facilities. In reality, large companies use strong arm tactics (like deep discounts on sutures) so long as hospitals buy inferior alternatives in different product categories. Despite this, Sylke is a juggernaut and sales are expanding as word gets out and surgeons demand the best for their patients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sylke, Inc ?
At SYLKE®, we’re dedicated to redefining wound care through innovative solutions. By combining the natural benefits of silk with cutting-edge medical technology, we’ve pioneered a new standard of care that prioritizes patient comfort, safety, and well-being. Our mission is to empower healthcare facilities, surgeons, and patients with superior products that deliver measurable improvements in patient outcomes and cost efficiency.

SYLKE® Adhesive Wound Closure is our first groundbreaking solution, revolutionizing the management of incisions and lacerations. Made from 99.9999% non-immunogenic, medical-grade silk fibroin, SYLKE® offers a biocompatible, breathable, and water-resistant closure that gently yet securely adheres to the skin. Its unique 360° stretch mimics the natural elasticity of skin, allowing for movement without compromising the wound closure. With up to 14 days of wear time, even on dynamic areas like joints, SYLKE® is designed to protect the wound, offload tension, and support the body’s natural healing process. With SYLKE®, we’re not just improving wound care – we’re defining a new standard of care that prioritizes patient outcomes and advances the future of healthcare.

How do you define success?
Success for Sylke is defined by improving surgical outcomes and expanding research and development into safer and more natural, non-synthetic alternative wound closure devices and dressings. Current dressings use PFAS “forever chemicals” and cause high rates of skin injuries, allergic and irritant contact dermatitis and surgical site infections. Sylke believes that these types of problems should be a thing of the past and that the archaic dressings of yesteryear will be replaced with a new standard of care to match the high level of technology that exists in medicine.
