Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Ledbetter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Of course! I’d like to start by saying this, my career has been a journey of finding my “who”, but I have always known my “what”.
From working in preschool teaching environments, as a home health aide, and in infant care, what has motivated and driven me has always been the same: to honor others with gentle and compassionate care. I have consistently navigated towards dignifying vulnerable and tender life transitions, comforting, supporting, and encouraging those around me.
This year, when I stepped, (more like dove) into birth and postpartum doula work, it was clear to me this was what I had been waiting for! Training as a birth doula through DONA Intl, and completing my certification as a postpartum doula through DNT Network felt like coming home! Being a doula is inherently the intersection of so many of the things I align with.
With my educational background in early childhood development, I have always been fascinated with the process of human growth and “becoming”. But now, I get an up close look, not just of the growth and of the arrival of a new life, but the growth and arrival of a family itself.
Alongside all of this, my own family story was an impactful piece to my finding this path. Having a mother, and an aunt as laywoman doulas, and having an (epic) L&D RN sister, I grew up with birth stories being told around the table at family get togethers. Some of my most formative experiences are around welcoming newborns into our family and thinking that nothing could be more precious.
I still believe that now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say that road has been without challenge! Doula work is complex, and becoming an advocate isn’t easy, it’s full of uncomfortable moments.
Birth is unique in that is it a rite of passage. In it, and even in supporting it, we confront many of the difficult pieces of our humanity: fear, mortality, justice, pain, and of course, self giving surrendering love.
It can be a challenge to witness and hold space for the often painful realities that mothers face. From my first birth support experience it became clear to me that many difficult birth stories could be prevented. Many lack the support, information, or advocacy they need. From witnessing the postpartum period, I couldn’t believe how little the experience of new mothers is discussed in broader culture.
I can say that the struggles I have seen and the stories I have carried put a fire in my belly, to engage! To protect, and educate, and equip mothers and families with the support they deserve. Support that strengthens and empowers.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I engage with growing families through my business: yourdoulameganrose. This can look different depending on if they need birth support, postpartum support, or both! For birth, we begin by working together prenatally to envision a birth experience that honors their vision and needs. I provide childbirth education, body balancing for birth, and comfort measures meetings where partners can get involved too!
For the birth itself, every story is truly unique. What stays consistent is that I provide informational assistance, comfort measures, advocacy, and emotional support from beginning to end.
When the baby has made their beautiful arrival, I can seamlessly switch gears into postpartum care. I help with hands on basic newborn care skills, breastfeeding assistance, meal prep and helping with light tasks around the home. And yes- you can direct all of the newborn questions my way, rather than doom scrolling through Google at 3am!
What distinguishes my services is a holistic approach that integrates physical comfort, emotional reassurance, and educational empowerment. I prioritize building strong relationships with clients, ensuring they feel heard, supported, and confident in their choices. I would describe myself as an evidence based doula. My commitment to staying informed about the latest research allows me to provide up-to-date and effective care!
