Today we’d like to introduce you to Melia & Cody Holcombe.
Hi Melia & Cody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
At the end of June 2020, I (Melia) left my teaching career. At that time, Cody, my husband, was a full-time stay-at-home dad with our 3 young children. With no real plan ahead besides Cody going back into doing electrical work – we knew we really wanted something flexible so we could spend more time with our children.
Our friends had been renting their 2 RVs out with success – however, they both worked full-time and needed more time – they decided to sell their two RVs. I wanted to buy them right away – Cody was not interested in ever owning an RV. After a few weeks and realizing that the potential profit and flexibility could be the perfect source of income for our family, we jumped at the offer and decided to purchase our friends’ two class-C RVs. In August 2020, we listed our two RVs for rent on the online marketplaces.
We were booked pretty solid through the end of 2020 and soon needed to grow our fleet – we started looking for more vehicles to add. We added what we call “Tioga,” the Adventure Van, and then in Jan 2021, we added another class-C RV.
Once we added more vehicles, we needed an official business name and decided on Sunny Road Rentals.
We currently have 2 camper vans and 3 class-C RVs for customers to choose from. We also take direct bookings on our website, where customers can check availability and book their trip.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not! While we were experienced campers and nature lovers, we had never RV’d before! Learning the ins and outs of operating an RV and fixing all the little things that go wrong was a big learning experience. Cody is an electrician by trade and a master DIYer – having the ability to fix and repair the RVs ourselves has been a key to our success.
We have had minor accident damage, and refrigerators go bad far more often than they should – it is all part of a rental business. So having to adapt when a vehicle goes down for a while is a hard adjustment to make.
Also, just relying on other people to plan trips and rent our RVs so we can have income – the unknown of it gets difficult sometimes. For instance, when we started, we didn’t think about how seasonal the rental business is. Winters are very slow business-wise, so trying to keep the cash flow going year-round is something we are still struggling with.
