Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Our families journey begins in the 70’s with my Grandma Ron Newell who started working in the furniture industry as a sales rep. When my dad turned 18 he became a sales rep. Eventually my dad took it a big step forward and became a whole saler, so he used to import from over seas and supply all the biggest chains in San Diego. Eventually when the economy crashes a few years back we lost everything we were homeless for 6 months and my dad had thousands of dollars worth of inventory in storage units and slowly began selling it off out of the storage units. That’s where he got the idea for our current business model of Mattress Store San Diego. My dad started in storage units that were dressed up with carpets and fake plants even music to make you forget you were in a storage unit. Eventually a few storage units became many, then came a warehouse then an even bigger warehouse house and now an additional 2nd location in Kearny Mesa following the same business model. Low over head, low cost so that we can sell the same mattresses other major stores sell but for 50-70% below retail value. On top of that, to be the best you have to not only have the lowest prices but you have to provide the best service and we do just that. We educate our customers using 50 year and 3 generations of experience with no pushy sales tactics just information and a friendly guide to help one of the hardest products to buy. A mattress! I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggles with our industry come from the fact that when the economy slows and people have less money, the last thing they’re thinking about buying is a mattress or furniture. So our industry is directly tied into how the economy is doing and right now the industry is in near critical condition, major stores going out of business or scaling down. Many of our competitors in our area are going out of business so it’s tough as is. On top of that we’re not very visible, we’ve chosen a location with not much foot traffic because it’s much cheaper so getting people to find us is always the biggest challenge, however when people buy from us once , they end up customers for life and refer us to everyone they know
We’ve been impressed with Mattress Store San Diego, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re far from your typical mattress store.
