Today we’d like to introduce you to Mishawna Romero.
Hi Mishawna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello! I’m Mishawna Romero, a 53-year-old college graduate from San Diego State University with a degree in Kinesiology. I’ve worked behind the chair for 18 years. Specializing in color, balayage (Painted Hair), and extensions. I’m based in Santee, California, where I live with my husband, our son, and our rescue cat, Fronkensteen.
My husband was in the Coast Guard so I have worked doing hair in these great places:
The Bay Area, Puerto Rico and now Southern California. I consider myself a working artist, and I draw deep inspiration from the American Southwest. I grew up in a gas stop town – Yuma Arizona. And there was nothing to do there, so I spent my time at the library and I jogged. As a desert girl at heart, I’m influenced by the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and the vibrant, earthy colors of the cacti and canyons. I bring that same desert energy into every color, cut, and extension appointment.
I chose this career because it gives me the freedom to be with my family and not have a boss. When I was 31 I decided to leave my personal training job, I hated it, the management, and the hours were awful. I had always wanted to do hair, so I went into the local beauty college here in San Diego and I applied for a scholarship. I got it! Tuition paid. I wanted to be a hairdresser so bad I never missed one day of hair school in a 10 month full time program, all while working at the same time to pay my bills.
I also love that in this career – I won’t be fired, or succumb to “ageism” in the work place. I can keep doing what I love for as long as I choose. I’m 53, and love to push my art to be better and better every year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of my struggles along the way have been giving bad haircuts or bad color jobs. When that happened, I feel devastated, but it fueled me to try harder, take more education and keep on perfecting my art. To this day I spend about 5000-7000 annually on training with the top artists in my field. I fly to their studios to train one on one with them. This has made a huge difference in the art I’m able to do now. I love the beautiful hair I can give my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a Luxury hairstylist in Santee.
I specialize in hand tied extensions, balayage (this is a hand painted highlight), and color (no rainbow colors) natural tones only.
I’m known for my Painted Hair balayage. I train with the master artist: Patricia Nikole @paintedhair, so the looks I create high contrast hair.
Also known for Habit Hidden Extensions. I train with the master artist: @hairby_chrissy. These amazing extensions blend the best with your natrual hair because of the custom coloring I do on the extensions to match your natural hair,
I also do silent appointments!! A woman can come in and work on her computer for the 2-3Hrs shes getting her hair done. I don’t play loud yammering music. Its spa music on low volume. Once I start coloring, I don’t talk, so that I concentrate on the hair and have you in and out in a timely manner.
Any big plans?
I’m going for my masters certification in the habit hidden extensions brand. I have been doing this extension method for 8 years, and this class will bring my art to the next level. I also have a YouTube channel: Mishawna Romero Hairstylist. I’d like to post more video tutorials for my clients this year. The channel is a way I can stay in touch with my awesome clients in between visits.
