Inspiring Conversations with Moe Karimi of San Diego Bike Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Karimi. 

Hi Moe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Moe Karimi, owner and founder of San Diego Bike Shop. Ever since my childhood in Tehran, Iran, I had a deep-rooted love for bikes. Through my teenage years and into my early twenties, I rode with delight and passion. At some point, responsibilities and family priorities resulted in me abandoning my hobby. 

In early 1998 about a decade and a half after my family and I settled in the U.S., an opportunity arose to lease a centrally-located property and start a business. I began to envision the possibilities and decided to lease the current location of San Diego Bike Shop to start a pedicab business. When we opened, we offered rudimentary bike repairs. However, as time went on, we noticed we were attracting more and more bicyclists who were requesting repairs, parts, and products. Encouraged by the promising location and the growing demand, I established San Diego Bike Shop in April of that year, which also reinvigorated my love of bikes and the bicycle culture. 

Over the past 23+ years, San Diego Bike Shop has become a popular neighborhood shop and a trusted name in the industry. We have endured difficult economic times, consequences of urban sprawl and crime in downtown, the 2020 COVID pandemic, and so many other challenges. Yet our business has managed to not only survive these difficult times but also thrive as a small-family-run business. In fact, on July 9, 2022, we announced our storefront expansion, where we will be offering a larger variety of bikes, electric bikes, accessories, and services. 

San Diego Bike Shop owes much of our success to the quality of our products & partnerships, our dedicated and highly experienced staff, and our desire to go above and beyond for our customers. At our core, we are a community business cultivated and supported by the loyal bike community. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. We have encountered many challenges. We have endured difficult economic times, urban sprawl and crime in downtown, the 2020 COVID pandemic, and so many other obstacles. With respect to the growing crime in downtown San Diego, we have been burglarized and vandalized more times than I can count. Yet each time, we vowed to adapt and operate smarter. As an immigrant small business owner myself, I have encountered prejudice at times. You name the challenge, and we have likely faced it. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The name of my company is San Diego Bike Shop. We specialize in providing the bicycle community with service, products, expertise, as well as knowledge to pursue their biking passion with the peace of mind that we are truly here for them. We believe that our level of customer service is unrivaled in the industry. We carry the latest and greatest brands and back our work with strong partnerships, manufacturer support, and full operational transparency. Community trust is our foundation for success, and we intend to keep it that way. 

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stick with it. Tenacity is everything! You will run into obstacles and issues. It’s guaranteed, but how you react and grow is where the difference is. Keep fighting and plowing through the challenges you face, and always be solution-oriented. Do not just look for the problem. Where you end up matters most!
