Today we’d like to introduce you to Nidia Rivas.
Hi Nidia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for baking started when I was 16 years old. At the time, my grandfather was living with us and I was having a difficult time at school, baking helped me cope with all the emotions teenagers go through at that age plus more. During that time, my mother found a place that offered baking classes and decided to enroll my sister, herself, and me. Till this day, baking has helped during times of high stress and anxiety. Besides enjoying the outcome of making these desserts and the compliments from the customers that have tried our desserts, it has also helped me mentally. I really love when people tell us that they’ve never had something as good as our desserts, it really gives a new meaning to life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth process. Having your own business and trying to succeed can always have its rough patches. Business can have its ups and downs, especially financially, and especially during Covid. With the industry growing, it is always necessary to come up with new and trending things and just trying to stay afloat with social media and its trends.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I started learning and baking cakes at the age of 16. We specifically focused in creating desserts for any family events and cater to customers as needed. One of my sisters’ husband has a passion for the kitchen and they started their artisan bread business. Together we offer desserts from fruit tarts to cookies to jello and cakes but we also provide the best artisan sourdough bread. We are home based but do pop-up events to get our business a bigger clientele.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe being hard workers has been the luck we’ve had. My dad owned his business for 39 years and seeing him and my mom be such hard workers has been what we needed in order to choose to become our own boss.
