Inspiring Conversations with Shauntis Bussey of Therapeutic Rebel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauntis Bussey.

Shauntis Bussey

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was taught to challenge the status quo and think critically about the messages we’re bombarded with about who we should be and what societal rules we should follow. It wasn’t easy. I often felt like I had a foot in more than one world, never truly belonging anywhere. That changed when I found friends, teachers, and providers who seemed to see and understand me.

My journey into the world of behavioral health didn’t begin with the belief that people needed to be saved or fixed. No, I believed they needed to be witnessed as the magnificent beings they were. They needed help crafting their own blueprint for navigating life within the various systems of oppression that surround us.

For 15 years, I worked within agency systems, thinking I could make a real impact from the inside. Then came COVID and the social uprisings that shook our world. It was during this time that I had a profound realization. Relying on behemoth corporate entities, even those with well-written mission statements, wouldn’t align with my true mission. These entities, I saw, would continue to perpetuate the very systemic issues reflected in our broader society.

So, I decided to take a bold step and founded Therapeutic Rebel, a virtual mental health practice based right here in California. Here, I’m not bound by the constraints of homogeneity. In this little corner of the world, I can truly support each client in dismantling the limiting beliefs we’ve been conditioned to accept and help them construct lives of liberation and joy.

Therapeutic Rebel isn’t just a therapy practice; it’s a sanctuary for those who, like me, have felt like they don’t quite fit into the mold society has cast for them. It’s a place where we challenge norms, celebrate uniqueness, and work together to create lives that reflect the authentic selves we’ve always known were there.

The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. And I’m grateful to stand alongside every client, helping them break free from the chains of societal expectations and embark on their own paths to true joy and self-celebration. Together, we’re rewriting the rules and crafting a better, more liberated world, one therapy session at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If I’m being honest, this journey has been exactly what I needed. It’s moved at the pace I’ve wanted, and it surprises me every year with new gifts and learning experiences. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of working with some exceptional folks who helped me build the infrastructure (big shoutout to Ohanele Law Firm).

However, there’s one persistent challenge in running this practice, and it’s dealing with insurance. Even when you set up everything perfectly, somewhere in these systems, some department drops the ball. They put in an incorrect address change the spelling of your name, and now you have to deal with five more steps just to get something that was correct to begin with re-corrected so you can get paid for the services provided. It’s exceptionally frustrating and just a small indicator of the many reasons why our healthcare system in this country is in need of a serious overhaul.

Despite the insurance woes, I’m proud of the work we do at our virtual therapy practice here in California. We’re here to provide support, understanding, and healing to those who seek our help.

We’ve been impressed with Therapeutic Rebel, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Therapeutic Rebel was founded with a clear mission: to support every client in dismantling their limiting beliefs and behaviors so they can experience joy and liberation.

We’re proud to be a women-founded and women-led practice. Our inclusive communities encompass LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Military, and their families, creating a safe and supportive environment for all.

At Therapeutic Rebel, we’ve made it a priority to be in-network with major insurers, including Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Blue Shield CA, and TriCare. This ensures that more people can access the mental health support they need without the added financial burden.

But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to convenience and flexibility. With our virtual therapy sessions, you can prioritize your mental well-being from the comfort of your own home. No more stressful commutes or scheduling conflicts. Our appointments are designed to seamlessly fit into your busy lifestyle, ensuring that you can access the support you deserve when you need it most. Your mental health matters, and we’re here to make it as accessible and stress-free as possible.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
