Inspiring Conversations with Terra Burke of Move With Terra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terra Burke.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Five years ago, I was a stay-at-home mom/wife with my two amazing kiddos (at that time- ages 6 & 9), President of PTA, running a chapter of Kids for Peace (a non-profit dedicated to building a worldwide community of kind, compassionate and empowered young people) with my best friend, and each week we met with every child in the elementary school to bring this vision to our community. On top of all the activities I was in charge of or involved with; I was also able to fit in daily runs and hikes with my adventurous friends who also prioritized their own fitness goals with motherhood. It was a good life!

But then life had a major shift, and my marriage ended after 13 years together. For anyone who has had to go through this process, you know how devastating this change in life can be. Now, when I look back at that time in reflection, I can see that it was the best catalyst for a major spiritual awakening and a quantum leap of personal growth. I’m going to be honest, my divorce felt bone crushing and heartbreaking. Most days, it took everything in me to figure out how to put one foot in front of the other while looking at my two beautiful children and take a leap into an unknown future that I did not want. None of this was achieved on my strength alone, I leaned heavily on my faith to guide me through the wilderness. Some days it can still feel that way, but I refer back to big milestones in the past and I know that God did not bring me this far, just to bring me this far. I believe this is true for all of us!

Following my divorce, I took my passion and love for movement and celebrating things that feel like love, peace, joy, fulfillment, and fun and started my company, Move With Terra. Today, you will find me moving with people from all over North County on the beach doing group fitness classes like HIIT, yoga, and bootcamps. I’ve added Certified Business and Life Coach from Buffini and Company to my resume in 2020, and have now coached hundreds of people both one-on-one and in group coaching sessions.

Who I was five years ago, is not the same person I am today. I have learned so much. I have been relentless in my pursuit and now I have complete clarity and conviction, and I know my purpose is to serve others. My company, Move With Terra, is designed to come beside anyone looking to level up their life. Whether it’s coming beside someone to help them figure out how to gain stability after divorce, start a new podcast, launch a new business, build a long-lasting real estate career, or support their wellness goals around movement and fitness- I will be there to challenge and champion them every step of the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been lots of obstacles. Not only was it hard and scary trying to find stability after my divorce but I was also discovering myself. This season was so iron-sharpening because I had to challenge myself every day not to give up, and in doing so, I built the confidence and systems needed to run my business so it could sustain my life for me and my children. The other thing I learned is that you can’t get married to one outcome (no pun intended, lol).

The windy road of entrepreneurship will always force you to take a pivot and adjust to new market conditions. For example: after I got certified in 2020 as a Business/Life Coach, the world shut down 3 months later. This was not the plan for my business. I questioned: how could I be a personal trainer and coach without being in front of people, and how the heck was I going to coach people and market my business if I couldn’t be face to face with people to grow my business… Well, it took me one week to figure out how to set up a Zoom account to launch virtual workouts in the morning, PE classes at lunch, and start coaching clients all over the US and Canada. BOOM!

The secret is to keep putting one foot in front of the other, even if it’s small- little by little, a little becomes a lot. For me, I had seasons of small, micro steps that didn’t feel like steps at all and then moments that moved me leaps and bounds. It is the hardest, scariest, and best feeling when you get to bring your life’s vision alive. Today, my best advice to anyone just starting out is keep going. If you want to shorten the learning curve, ensure you are committed to a mentor to support and inspire your journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Move With Terra?
I am a Business/Life/Movement Coach. It is my promise to keep my clients’ goals alive, whether it’s in their business, wellness, or overall fulfillment in life, I stand in the gap of where they are today and where they want to be one year, three years, five years or ten years from now. Working through a deep discovery session, together we’ll figure out what’s really important and co-create a plan to get there, one step at a time.

My clients often say that my style of coaching is highly motivational, spirited, passionate, focused, and fun. If you go to my website (www.movewithterra.com) you will see my personal brand and mantra is highlighted right at the top with three words in the header: RISE~ SERVE~ THRIVE.

Each day, I RISE, I believe in waking up with a strong intention designed around a morning routine. For me, it starts with a devotional, a quick journal session around gratitude, coffee/tea and a little space to pray or be quiet. After creating space for taking things S L O W, I’ll bring movement into my day. It’s pretty simple, but it helps ground me for the day and pour from an endless well. Without this practice, my day can be a bit more scattered, less productive and intentional. For those I coach, they find that this one practice has benefited them in more ways than one. One of the great things about working with a coach is understanding a vision for your life and how to show up for those around you. This comes down to strengthening a heart of service and a plan that shows how to SERVE wholeheartedly. And lastly, THRIVE. If you can help enough people get what they want, you’ll see that you in turn have everything you’ve ever wanted. Everyone wants to sell you something, but I teach my clients how to shift from selling to serving. This sequence moves lives and creates more fulfillment in the journey.

How do you define success?
AHHH…this is the best question. I recently had to redefine my definition of success last year. Somewhere along the way I had subscribed to someone else’s idea of success. I got the idea that success came packaged in busyness, overwhelm trying to build my bank account, hustling and grinding with few vacations and collapsing on the couch with nothing left to give at the end of the day.

Last year, I had achieved a level of success that was admirable for where I had come from and I was proud to beat my chest about how much I had accomplished. However, I started noticing the hands on the clock spinning faster each day. I looked at my kids and saw that I was missing so much. I knew I had to make some changes because intuitively, I knew someday I’d look back and regret the time I missed. Only by trying on someone else’s definition of success did I realize it didn’t fit. Ouch!

This gave me so much clarity of what success looks like and feels like to ME. Today, my definition of success is spelled T-I-M-E. Four letters. Time with my kids, family/friends, God, being in nature, serving my community, and experiencing so much fulfillment encouraging others to create this same passion and clarity for their life.
