Inspiring Conversations with Therese FitzRandolph of The Learning Convergence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Therese FitzRandolph.

Hi Therese, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I came to San Diego in 1986 and started working at a reading clinic by the name of Reading Connections. There I first worked as a clinician and then later became a consultant, supervising newer teachers. I started my own practice in 1991. I love teaching reading as much today as I did when I started!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been smooth. I worked a second job the first few years of my own practice. In 1993 things took off and I was able to support our family from the money I earned in my practice. There were times that things were difficult, especially after the crash of 2008. But I am resourceful and made my way through that. Before things like social media (and Yelp), it was hard to get the word out about the work I do. But as I continued to work with children from all over the county, the word spread about the successes of the program, and I started getting referrals from schools and neuropsychologists. With the event of social media, people were able to share their child’s success with everyone, and things really started to grow. With everyone homebound during Covid, my business skyrocketed and hasn’t slowed down since.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Learning Convergence?
Since 1986, Director Therese FitzRandolph of The Learning Convergence has been serving students in grades K-12 with literacy and learning difficulties throughout San Diego County. The Learning Convergence was founded when it was realized that despite schools’ efforts to boost reading scores, there was a large population of average to above-average students with reading problems whose needs were not being met in the traditional classroom, special ed classrooms, or through standard tutoring techniques. We offer one-on-one Reading Instruction to students in grades 1-Adult. Comprehension, decoding, phonological processing issues, spelling and writing. It is our mission to provide high quality, one-on-one reading and language arts instruction in a quiet, caring environment.

I am different from the other tutoring centers in that it is all one-on-one with me, and the kids only work with me. So many places the children have a different instruction each lesson. I pride myself in providing high quality instruction in a nurturing and supportive way – with a great sense of humor thrown in to make it more fun for the students – and me!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Quiet and shy. We moved a lot. I loved reading and animals, especially horses.
