It all began two years ago, purely as a joke. At that time, I was sharing an apartment with my friend Ivan, who was well aware of my dream to open a coffee shop. However, that dream seemed distant and unreal. Then, one day, I made an impulsive decision to purchase an espresso machine because I noticed I was spending a significant amount of money on buying coffee every day. I began sharing pictures of my homemade drinks on my Instagram account, and to my surprise, some of my coworkers expressed an interest in trying my coffee. I vividly recall one of them, who had a strong penchant for Starbucks, taking a sip and remarking, “So, is this what real coffee tastes like?
I shared the story with Ivan, and he asked, “Why don’t you start selling coffee to your coworkers?” I thought it was a great idea and a small step toward pursuing my dream of owning a coffee shop.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a roller coaster, especially since I decided to focus solely on my business. I quit my job back in February, and I guess this is a ‘kind of a new concept’ to sell coffee from an apartment; not many people are aware of it. Eventually, I want to have a mini food truck so I can move around the South San Diego area, but that is something I can’t afford right now. There are good days, but sometimes, it’s not enough to sustain the business and cover my bills. There are days when I think about pausing my business and getting a job to have a steady income, but every time I gain new customers who enjoy my coffee and return, that’s what keeps me motivated to keep going.
