Today we’d like to introduce you to Vyshali Pallapotu
Hi Vyshali, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born in India, specifically Hyderabad, Telangana, I embarked on my journey after completing my MBA. I came to USA after marriage and settled in San Diego. Like many, I had aspirations for both a fulfilling career and a family. I delved into the corporate world, working as a software tester in various renowned companies like Medimpact, Qualcomm Inc., Jansen Pharmaceuticals, and Carefusion. Despite enjoying a successful career, the entrepreneurial bug always lingered within me, driving me to pursue something of my own. With a penchant for creativity, I longed to showcase the talent of Indian weavers and their creations. Starting small with a few vendors online, my business gradually expanded, allowing me to work with numerous artisans. My goal was always to offer the best prices and quality to my customers, and the joy they expressed upon receiving their purchases kept me motivated. This passion eventually led me to establish my own boutique business named Vyshali’s Ethnic Collection during the pandemic, sourcing exquisite Indian clothing and jewelry directly from manufacturers while also supporting weavers in India. I carry a lot of handloom sarees, salwars, Indo-western outfits, and also some exquisite jewelry. I go through a tedious process of picking the right color combinations and the right kind of clothes for my customers. My desire to offer the best prices and quality to customers, coupled with my creativity in sourcing exquisite Indian clothing and jewelry, has been a driving force behind the success of Vyshali’s Ethnic Collection.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been a rollercoaster ride, especially with the challenge of balancing work and family life, particularly with two teenagers. But it hasn’t been easy. The news of my mom’s late-stage lung cancer diagnosis shook my world, and traveling during COVID-19 to be with her was incredibly tough, especially without a vaccine. Then, during the second wave, both my dad and I contracted COVID, making it a nightmare to manage everything, including my business, while battling the virus. Even now, I’m still dealing with a lot of side effects from the virus. It took a toll on my body. During this journey, I soon realized that being a woman and owning a small business is not an easy job. There were a lot of times I had to work late hours coordinating with people in India to deliver orders. I was a one-man army doing chores at home, taking orders from customers, marketing, and talking to vendors/tailors back in India.
But my business has been my lifeline throughout it all, bringing me joy and fulfillment as I help people find the perfect outfit for their special occasions. When I thought everything was getting back to normal after the COVID nightmare, soon I had to face another challenge in my life.
Sadly, my mom passed away a year ago, making it incredibly challenging to bounce back and thrive in my business. It has been challenging for me since then. I feel she is always there way at the back of my mind. However, with the unwavering support of my family, especially my husband and my kids, I’ve been able to persevere. With around 9000 followers on Instagram, my boutique is gaining recognition, and I dream of expanding beyond our home market in the future. Alongside running my business, I’ve been volunteering with Aksha Patra for eight years. I am also part of the core committee and help with a lot of youth programs In San Diego. Akshaya Patra is a nonprofit organization. It ensures that no child is deprived of education because of hunger. It provides hot mid-day meals to a lot of schools across India, the Foundation upholds its Right to Food as well as its Right to Education and Aspire. Happy to say that a small percentage of my profits goes to support this organization. I’m deeply grateful to be part of this non-profit, thanks to my dear friend Sonali Chandorkar (one of the chairs at Akshaya Patra SD), who introduced me to this organization.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
One of the most significant risks I’ve taken was the decision to launch Vyshali’s Ethnic Collection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting a new business amidst such uncertainty was undoubtedly daunting, especially considering the economic challenges and logistical hurdles posed by the global crisis. However, I saw an opportunity to fulfill my passion for promoting Indian craftsmanship while also addressing the evolving needs of customers during a time of social distancing and remote shopping.
This decision required careful consideration and strategic planning. I conducted thorough market research, analyzed consumer trends, and assessed the potential risks and rewards before taking the plunge. While there were no guarantees of success, I was willing to take the risk because I believed in the value proposition of my business and the resilience of the human spirit.
Ultimately, the risk paid off, and Vyshali’s Ethnic Collection began to gain traction, resonating with customers who appreciated the authenticity and quality of our products. The journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but each obstacle has presented an opportunity for growth and learning.
In my view, risk-taking is not about blindly leaping into the unknown but rather about making informed decisions based on a thorough understanding of the situation and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. It’s about being adaptable, resilient, and open to new possibilities, even in the face of adversity.
As an entrepreneur, I recognize that not every risk will pay off, but I firmly believe that the greatest rewards often come from stepping outside of your comfort zone and daring to pursue your dreams. It’s about finding the balance between caution and courage and having the confidence to trust your instincts and intuition.
In conclusion, while risk-taking may seem daunting, it is an essential aspect of personal and professional growth. By embracing calculated risks and remaining resilient in the face of challenges, we can unlock new opportunities, achieve our goals, and, ultimately, fulfill our potential.
