Jerry & Joevany Flores on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Jerry & Joevany Flores and have shared our conversation below.

Jerry & Joevany , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
For our company, aside from waking up and getting to our shop, the first 90 minutes is dedicated to a check-in & going over our “game plan” for the day. Time management is the most important aspect of our day & business. We take a breather, talk about how our evenings went and if we did something different we share what it was, joke around for a few extra minutes, then we go over our “game plan”. We discuss who is going to be doing what. We go over our methods and processes for completing the projects we have, if someone has a better or simpler idea for completion, then we’ll bounce those ideas back and forth to an agreement. If we have meetings scheduled or have to pick-up materials, we factor in what steps to take to complete those tasks without compromising either one of those things or the project itself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, our names are Jerry & Joevany Flores, together we are the owners of our family-operated business Futura Fiberglass Systems LLC. We are categorized as a specialty trade of synthetic products, our main product being fiberglass, and our organization revolves around fiberglass fabrication and repair. Fiberglass is a widely used material amongst many different industries which include: construction, automotive, marine, aerospace, and industrial/manufacturing. What sets our company apart from others is our skill set to fabricate unique fiberglass products, original and custom parts of all kinds of different shapes, sizes & colors. If a customer has a concept or blueprint they’d like to create, we can get the job done!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Being involved in this type of family-oriented business has definitely taught us the most about work. Our craftmanship journey began when my grandfather started this company in the mid 70s and taught my father, who then taught my uncle and myself. Through the years, our industries methods, procedures, and materials have evolved quite a bit and we’ve had to learn to go with the flow and improve our knowledge and experience with these new practices. Over time, we’ve perfected these techniques to become one of the best in our field. One thing for certain Jerry and I both agreed upon, is that trial and error had to be experienced for us to get to where we are today!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! The first two years of running this business took a toll on us emotionally, physically and financially. My uncle and I have always been workers, so we knew very little to nothing when it came to actually running a business. During those first two years, we experienced hard loss of life of friends & family members, we lost out on ALOT of good business opportunities, our bank account depleted with expenses, and we struggled to make decent ends meet. This created plenty of tension between us and at times we found ourselves at each others throats. We considered quitting and selling the company, or one of us leaving and the other staying. Being in a position like that really tests your will, and although we knew success comes slowly, our patience and self-belief was running thin.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Although it cannot be scientifically proven, we truly believe in the power of manifestation. Those first two years of struggling to keep our business afloat had us at times praying for opportunities & help, because it seemed like no matter what we were doing, it wasn’t enough to keep us sustained. We then started diving more into positive thinking and really implementing the phrase “so as you think it, so shall it be”. Day after day, we held onto this form of belief, and continued to tell ourselves that this job or this opportunity or this new business relationship was going to form, and sure enough, one by one they did! It’s truly a remarkable experience when manifestations actually manifest themselves into reality and we’ve continued to hold onto that super power which has definitely contributed to new growth for ourselves and our company.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Living a life. One issue Jerry and I both struggle with is separating ourselves more from our business space and just enjoying life. The business worry switch is always on even when things are going great. We’ll find ourselves at times working 10-12 hours days, sometimes more, 7 days a week, and although this is the norm for some, it’s definitely taxing on the mind & body. Sometimes it is challenging to be present amongst friends and family and not thinking about work or enjoying whatever we’re doing in the moment. One thing we definitely need to work on is learning how to take a vacation! We understand this is normal when it comes to running your own company, and don’t get me wrong, we have improved this aspect since we first started. However, moving forward this year we’ve learned to take more time off and enjoy all the little things, still working on the vacation part!
