Kat Kendria of San Diego on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kat Kendria. Check out our conversation below.

Kat, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I find joy in performing—whether it’s singing, dancing, or just exploring new creative outlets. I love taking dance classes to challenge myself and improve my skills. I’m also a big fan of video games, which offer a fun escape and a way to unwind. I enjoy discovering new restaurants as well, trying different cuisines, and exploring what the city has to offer.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a passionate singer and dancer with over a decade of experience in various styles of music and dance. I’ve had the honor of performing for crowds of up to 5,000 people, including notable performances at the United Nations General Assembly in Times Square, the Kennedy Center, and the Fourth of July Festival in Rancho Bernardo, CA. I specialize in a mix of genres—Contemporary, Ballads, Pop, Jazz, Soul, and R&B as a singer, and Hip Hop, Jazz Funk, AfroBeats, and Heels as a dancer—always aiming to deliver unique and heartfelt performances.

Music has been my life’s passion since I was a child, and I’m driven by an insatiable desire to put on the best performances possible. I believe competition fuels creativity, but empathy is what truly connects artists. I’m deeply grateful for the recognition I’ve received, including a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition and acknowledgments from San Diego County and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. My biggest inspiration is my mom, who has supported me from day one and helped shape my journey.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I was 12, performing a solo piece of “We Are the World” in front of more than a hundred people. Standing under the spotlight, with everyone’s attention on me, was exhilarating. It was the moment I realized the power of music and performance, and I loved how it felt to connect with the audience and fully express myself. That experience sparked my passion for performing and showed me the impact it can have.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, like most artists, there were definitely times when I almost gave up. The creative career path can be tough, especially when finding gigs feels like a constant struggle. There are moments when you question if it’s worth it or if you can actually build a thriving career. But deep down, I knew this was the path I was meant to take. I understood from the start that it wouldn’t be easy, but I also realized that I couldn’t see myself doing anything else that would make me as happy or fulfilled. That’s what keeps me going.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would definitely say that love really matters to me. The love I have for my family, friends, and life partner holds a special place in my heart. I deeply value the relationships in my life, as they’ve always been a source of support and strength throughout my journey. Their encouragement has been vital in helping me grow and stay grounded.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will remember me as someone who lit up every room and stage with passion and joy. That I performed with heart, always giving my all, and that my love for music, dance, and the people in my life was undeniable. I want to be remembered not just for my talent, but for the warmth I shared and the way my performances made others feel seen, moved, and inspired.
