We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kau’i Castaneda. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Kau’i, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, bowling in a league has been bringing me joy. It’s once a week and it’s been such a fun way to relax, be active, and connect with people outside of work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Aloha mai kākou (Hello everyone!)! My name is Kau’i Castaneda and I have the privilege of being a hula instructor and director for Ka Lama ‘O Kau’i Kūikanani, teaching hula and sharing the Hawaiian culture here on the mainland. For me, hula is more than just movement- it’s a way to keep the stories, language, and traditions of Hawai’i alive and to share that joy with others.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I’d say that everyone around me saw my potential before I even did. Family, friends, mentors- they all believed in me and and encouraged me, even when I couldn’t fully see it in myself.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t give up on yourself and what you want to do. You’re never too old to begin the journey you’ve always wanted.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is ‘ohana, culture, creating meaningful connections with others, and staying true to yourself.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I wouldn’t stop anything. My dad once told me “Life is a journey, just enjoy the ride”, and that is something I carry with me every day. Rather than cutting things out, I’d focus on embracing every moment and continue to live fully, love deeply, and find joy in the small and big parts of the ride.
