Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Dorris.
Brianna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a freelance Wardrobe Stylist based in Los Angeles/The Valley. Originally from the AV (Antelope Valley. I began styling by assisting/interning with many wardrobe stylists in the industry. A few of the stylist’s I’ve worked with have been GiGi Fernandez, “Milli” Doster, Zerina Atkins, and more! I’ve been on multiple Video/Photoshoot sets helping assist these stylists for many artist we know and love such as Beyoncé Knowles, Chris Brown, Yella Beezy, Tink and many more! I began my first internship by searching tirelessly on indeed for “wardrobe stylist internships”. I was determined to land SOMETHING! I was eager when I received my first internship but it had NOTHING to do with fashion lol. My duties were to email magazines and pack and ship shampoo bottles!
Even though this had nothing to do with fashion, I was still eager and determined to do a great job because I still had hope this would lead me to my first actual fashion internship. I stayed for a while until one of the coworkers told me I can do a lot better than this and he can see me going further in a different environment. I took his advice and landed an actual stylist internship with a popular showroom by the name of TheAList PR in Beverly Hills. Wardrobe stylists came in everyday to pull clothing and I made sure to speak to them and hand them business cards. Letting them know if they ever needed an assistant I’m their girl! From there, I started to receive calls, emails, and more and it’s lead me to meet and work with some great people. Along with branching off into my own freelance business, brand, and networking event.
Has it been a smooth road?
This has not been an easy journey! I still learn what to do and what not to do everyday! I have been short changed, not taken seriously, and taken advantage of while being on this journey. However, it has helped shape me into the businesswoman I am and am still becoming. The main advice I would give young women starting their journey is to be confident in your craft, assertive, and always willing to learn! Those three keys will ensure you’re not getting taken advantage of, short changed, and it lets everyone know you take your craft serious! I am nowhere near where I want to be but by keeping God first I am getting closer and closer with each business move I make! I would also say not to be afraid to put yourself out there! Believe in yourself and go for everything you want in this world. People will only take you as serious as you take yourself!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with StylesByBrii/COLLAB/One Of One – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
So as stated before I am a freelance Wardrobe Stylist I’ve worked with many clients who are on the up and up such as Azjah, 1TakeJay, 600Breezy, ArmonieJay, Austin Sackett and more. I’m the person you come to for your creative ensembles! My eye for creativity can make your performance or shoot go to the next level needed in order to turn heads! I specialize in wardrobe styling because my love of clothes is beyond words. I love to interact with them! The best feeling is when a client feels they are the finest thing walking after I’ve done my magic on them! I’m most known for wardrobe styling and my very own networking event titled COLLAB. COLLAB is a networking event for up and coming creatives to come together network, shoot, and produce content all at the same time! It’s an inspiring event for anyone who is trying to get their foot in the door and get a taste of the industry! The event consists of models, photographers, wardrobe stylists, & MUA’s.
All attendees come with the mindset of working together to produce dope content! God placed this event on my heart due to the many questions I would receive on how to get started and produce content in the industry. It also helps these creatives because we all need a team in these career fields so what better way to network than to actually work and show off your gift! This event has allowed people to gain new connections, new fan bases, and new content for their work. It has become the place to be if you’re serious about your work. Creating this event has to be one of the business adventures I’m most proud of. It allowed me to pour the knowledge and experience I’ve gained from interning/assisting into the next upcoming creative. I believe in the act of paying it forward and helping the next person out and COLLAB does just that! I hold this event close to my heart because I know I am helping many people get started with their passions.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
One of the biggest barrier’s in my opinion would be the respect factor. Women often times have to work harder to be taken serious rather than a man who often receives respect as soon as he steps into the room. For this reason, I make sure to practice confidence and assertiveness when it comes to business. Whoever you encounter should know you are a businesswoman and should be taken just as serious as the next person.
