Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dagan Koffler of Encinitas

Dagan Koffler shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Dagan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
While every day is different, I always start my morning the same way with a sunrise walk before the workday begins. It’s my way of creating a sense of consistency and clarity before diving into projects. Once I head into the office, no two days are alike. Every project brings new challenges and priorities, but that morning routine helps ground me and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dagan Koffler and I am the founder of Dagan Design & Construction, the parent company of DDC Landscape, DDC Next, and DDC & Co. We are a high-end design-build firm based in North County San Diego specializing in custom residential homes, renovations, and full-scope design services.

What makes us unique is that we truly handle projects from start to finish. Many general contractors require outside designers, but we have an in-house team that can manage both design and construction. This creates a seamless experience for our clients while still allowing us to collaborate with outside designers when desired. We also provide post-build home care and high-end landscape construction, which allows us to support clients long after their homes are complete.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father had a huge influence on my work ethic and perspective. He built the home I grew up in, and I spent much of my childhood on that construction site. Watching him manage the process and seeing a home come to life from the ground up instilled a deep respect for craftsmanship and patience. That early exposure shaped the foundation of how I approach every project today.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I feel fortunate that my team truly listens to me every day, and I make it a priority to listen to them as well. We value each other’s opinions and create space for collaboration. The same goes for my clients. I believe listening is a two-way street. When you actively listen to others, they are more inclined to genuinely listen to you. That mutual respect is essential in both leadership and design.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am deeply committed to never cutting corners. In home building and design, the smallest details make the biggest difference. Even the elements a homeowner may never consciously notice are critical to the integrity and longevity of the project. Quality craftsmanship and attention to detail are non-negotiable for me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I truly believe I am doing what I was born to do. I grew up surrounded by construction, but my path wasn’t linear. After college I moved to New York and worked in the wine and restaurant industry while also designing sets for photography shoots and window displays. That creative work sharpened my eye for storytelling and detail.

Eventually I returned home and started building pergolas, which evolved into full home projects and ultimately the launch of my business. What began as a passion turned into a career that blends creativity, craftsmanship, and leadership.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. Running a company required me to grow beyond being a carpenter and designer. I had to learn logistics, financial management, and team leadership. The biggest challenge has been maintaining my creative vision while scaling the business, but those growing pains strengthened my commitment to quality and meaningful design. Today, leading a talented team that shares the same passion for craftsmanship confirms that I am exactly where I’m meant to be.
