Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dmitriy Guy of LA JOLLA

Dmitriy Guy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Dmitriy, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I was strip coaching at the JUNIOR OLYMPICS/NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and our student , Anthony Jiang, got a Gold medal. I was so happy ans got so exited that one second after he scored last touch I jumped on the podium and bear hugged him . Next morning American Fencing magazine chose this photo to publish on their cover with this sign: This coach does not any any more caffeine!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

La Jolla Fencing Academy/SPARTAK Fencing Club

LJFA provides a comfortable and elite fencing education for fencers of ALL skills, ages, and interests.

LJFA’s SPARTAK Club was founded in 1991 by the head-coach Dmitriy Guy (US National Coach, US North American Open Champion and Soviet Union National Champion).

LJFA’s World-Class Coaching staff is one of the best in the US and dedicates itself to each and every student.

LJFA’s training program allows any fencer to achieve his or her dream of competing at the highest level of this Olympic sport.

LJFA’s athletes are members of U.S. National Teams, have won NCAA Championships, and have been named All-Americans at top colleges and universities.

LJFA trains some of the best fencers in the World right here in San Diego, CA. We are the only fencing club in San Diego who has produced World and National Champions.

LJFA’s athletes have been recruited to compete for the most prestigious colleges in the US, including Caltech, Harvard, Columbia, Notre Dame, Wharton School of Business (UPENN), UCSD, NYU and many others.

LJFA is centrally located in UTC/La Jolla, in a modern, state-of-the-art facility with shock-absorbent hardwood flooring, climate control, and top-of-the-line fencing equipment.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I am trying to implement and teach kids three things at the club : Honesty, Integrity and Respect!

So I believe that these 3 things will break the bonds between people—and will restore them

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
My wife truly listened to me about the importance of fencing for our son when he was 9 and sacrifice you have to do to reach your goals. She listened , was supporting and it worked out. My son, Philippe Guy became a member of USA National team and was later recruited to Harvard University

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Winston Churchill

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People think that the main goal of my club is teaching Fencing. That is not correct.
I want to build characters. I want my students to become good citizens, good sons and daughters, good parents in the future. If they become good fencers in the process it will be icing on the cake for me.
