Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dr. Chelsea Smithback

Dr. Chelsea Smithback shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Chelsea, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have been loving the warm weather and going on more runs (training for a half marathon), tennis, beach volleyball and jumping in the ocean!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a naturopathic doctor and co-founder of a woman’s wellness app coming out.
I have a background as a nutritionist and personal trainer as well.
My clinical specialties’ include Sports Medicine, PRP injections, Skin health, Mental health, Hormones, Weight management and Gut health.

My own skin and hormonal health was what propelled me to find alternative health treatments and led to becoming a naturopathic doctor. I have also always had an interest in sports medicine, and was a dual sport college athlete and see many patients for sports medicine and performance.
As a naturopathic doctor, I bridge western and holistic medicine together, using both when needed for what will be best for the patient.

I also am one of the only naturopathic doctor’s in Southern California that can accept insurance (Blue Shield of California.)

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I can’t say that there was a single moment, however I have travelled the world often and seeing the differences and similarities among people all over the world has shaped my viewpoint. At the end of the day, regardless of cultural backgrounds, political backgrounds, past experiences, we all just want for everyone to be happy and healthy. During times when the world feels divided, i try to have compassion that the overall goal is for the happiness, safety and health of our loved ones.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
To value your achievements. If everything came easy, you wouldn’t value having the adversity to go through what’s hard and value the achievements and outcomes that come from it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, definitely. I am always my normal self and try to showcase on social media. I am very blessed that i am naturally very bubbly and enthusiastic and try to live my life to the best that I can, and have gotten many comments that it’s very inspiring and encouraging for friends and anyone that sees, so i try to continue to be my encouraging self on a day to day.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think most people do understand this, but not taking our health for granted and that our health and the health of our loved ones is ultimately the most important thing we have. We often times go through our days not thinking about how great it is to be able to move, to breathe easily, to feel energized, to feel at peace…etc. Oftentimes once it’s taken away is when we miss it more than anything.
At the end of the day; accomplishments, achievements, anything else really doesn’t matter as much as our health and our loved ones health.
