Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Emily Esparza of South Bay San Diego

We recently had the chance to connect with Emily Esparza and have shared our conversation below.

Emily, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly, my family brings me joy. Growing up, I was around my grandparents all the time, they would walk me to school and look after me while my parents were working hard. I look forward to family get togethers because our family is centered around our grandparents. Recently, I had a birthday party at my home. I just recently turned 23 on July 24. I remembered when my family was gathered around the kitchen singing me happy birthday, I felt the love engulf me. My family means everything to me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a journalism student at Southwestern College, passionate about telling human interest stories through words and images. My work has appeared in the SWC Sun and magazine interviews like SD Voyager, CanvasRebel, and Bold Journey
Magazine. I love to write about my Mexican-American culture and photograph them as well. I have won over 21 national awards for my writing and photography.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bond between people I would say would be miscommunication and lying. What restores them is admitting to your faults and flaws and fixing these bonds. No human is 100% perfect. Communication is everything to me, one simple argument or misunderstanding can be cleared up just by stopping and talking about it. This can be applied to your personal life and work style life. We need to learn to work and adapt with one another even if you do not like working with the other person. I feel a lot of people forget about the other person’s feelings.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
One kind thing I would say to younger self it would be really stop and slow down to enjoy these moments in your youth. I remembered being little and telling myself , “I can not wait to be older!”, now I am 23 and I would do anything to go back in time and enjoy those wonderful moments and live in them. I am always working and going to school, I rarely have time to myself. I remember having so much free time when I was little, I honestly took it for granted. Now as an adult, I have such little time to myself. It was nice being a kid, to just focus on having fun, really live life to the fullest. We only have one life, enjoy it little Emily. Time flies so quick…

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is only one side of me, I try to show a professional side to me. Although that is not the “whole” me. That is only one fragment of me. I have tons of other sides I show to my family, friends, strangers and so fourth. I am a very laid back person and a quiet person. Once I warm up to a person, I am friendly and reveal more of myself. I try to spread kindness to others, one act of kindness, even giving a smile to someone can brighten up their day.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I always give my everything in life, I am not doing it for appraisal. I am a hard worker, and that reflects in my job, life and school. I have goals in my life I want to accomplish, I want to get my B.A in Journalism and find a career in that field. My two passions are writing and photography. To have a job that you enjoy and love is the lifestyle I want and dream on.
