We recently had the chance to connect with Eva Luz Carrillo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eva Luz, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Cooking has been bringing me joy lately. I’ve always enjoyed finding new and interesting recipes online, but recently, I’ve been into purchasing cookbooks and taking the time to read them thoroughly, not just browse them for a fun recipe to make. Cooking with intention and not just the need to make a meal has become very important to me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Eva Luz Carrillo, the Chief Visionary Officer and founder of Edgy Chola Designs. I create one-of-a-kind jewelry for the fearless individual. I create pieces that embody individuality, strength, and self-expression.
I’ve been designing original jewelry since 2000, blending culture, emotion, and edge into every creation. What makes my work special is the intention behind each piece. Every design carries its own story and energy, just like the person who wears it. For me, jewelry isn’t just adornment; it’s identity, art, and empowerment combined.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my father. As the daughter of immigrants, I grew up understanding that hard work wasn’t optional—it was essential to building the life you dream of. My father used to tell me stories about crossing the Tijuana–San Diego border at just 14 years old to take on whatever odd jobs he could find. Eventually, he and his brothers started their own landscaping company in San Diego, which grew into a thriving business. In fact, much of the landscaping you see along major Southern California freeways was done by their company. His strength, grit, and determination shaped how I approach everything I do today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one kind thing, it would be: “Your voice matters.”
Growing up as the youngest of seven, I often felt like I faded into the background—the “baby” of the family who wasn’t always taken seriously. For a long time, I struggled to believe that what I had to say carried weight. It’s taken years of self-reflection and therapy to unlearn that and to stand firmly in my own voice. Now, that sense of self-expression shows up in everything I create.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe in staying true to my originality and never creating just to fit into the mainstream. I’m constantly pushing my creativity to find new ways for my jewelry to stand out and tell its own story.”
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m creating. It’s the one space where I can let go of everything else and just be present with my thoughts and emotions. My art is my sanctuary. When I’m creating, everything else fades away, and I can fully surrender to the rhythm of my imagination. When I’m lost in my art, I feel the most like myself, calm, connected, and free.
