We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jose Martinez. Check out our conversation below.
Jose, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day start with family. I’m up early getting my kids ready and taking them to school, which really grounds me before the rest of the day kicks in. Once I’m back, I’ll grab some breakfast and coffee, then take a little time to check my calendar and emails so I know what’s on deck — whether it’s a wedding, an edit I need to finish, or prep for an upcoming event. Music is always part of the mix too; sometimes I’ll listen to something easygoing, other times I’ll check out new tracks or remixes to keep my library sharp. By the time those 90 minutes are up, I’ve taken care of family, organized my day, and gotten a spark of inspiration to dive into the creative side of my work
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JP Martinez, but most people know me as JPTheDJ. I’m a bilingual DJ, music editor, and event curator based in San Diego. I’ve been DJing for over 20 years, and what makes my brand unique is how I bring together different cultures, genres, and generations on the dance floor. One night I might be blending Latin rhythms with Top 40 and house, and the next it’s timeless classics with modern remixes — my goal is always to create a soundtrack that feels personal and unforgettable for each event.
Beyond weddings and private events, I also work as a music editor with BPM Supreme and BPM Latino, where I create custom edits and remixes that DJs worldwide use in their sets. That side of my work keeps me plugged into the global DJ community, while my events keep me connected locally with couples, families, and organizations. Right now, I’m focused on growing my brand, expanding creative collaborations, and continuing to raise the standard for what a DJ can bring to a wedding or special event.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I didn’t always believe I could turn my love for music into a real career. I thought being a DJ was more of a hobby or something you did on the side, not something that could grow into a full-time profession and brand. Over time, with a lot of hard work, late nights, and the support of people around me, I realized that passion can absolutely be the foundation for your career. Now I don’t just believe it — I live it every day.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self, “Trust the process — the passion you have for music is going to take you further than you ever imagined. Don’t be afraid to dream bigger, and don’t let self-doubt stop you from putting yourself out there. The struggles you’re going through now are shaping the person and the DJ you’ll become.”
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — what you see in public is really me. The energy, the passion for music, the way I connect with people on the dance floor, that’s all genuine. Of course, like anyone, I have a quieter side too — the family man, the dad, the person who loves a good breakfast spot or just relaxing at home. But the version of me people see at events or online isn’t an act; it’s just me in a different setting, sharing the part of myself that loves creating moments and memories through music.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had 10 years left, I’d stop wasting energy on doubt and overthinking. I’d let go of the little stresses that don’t really matter in the big picture. Instead, I’d double down on making memories with my family, creating music, and pouring everything into the moments that actually last. Life moves fast, and I’d want every day to count.
