We recently had the chance to connect with Julie Bravo and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Just like movies, I LOVE losing myself and escaping into another world for a bit by reading books. Right now I’m averaging about a book a week. Contemporary Fiction is my go to, and I love thrillers as well.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Julie Bravo, President & CEO of UltraStar Cinemas, a locally owned and operated movie theater that has been serving the San Diego community for over 25 years. There is NOTHING like the magic of the movies, and it is my honor to provide quality entertainment to our guests at competitive prices in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me the most about work, and how diligence and resilience are essential to success. Watching him as an entrepreneur build his own business has been inspiring. He led by example, showing me that integrity and strong relationships are cornerstones to success.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
After almost 20 years working in the movie exhibition industry, I almost left in early 2021. With theaters shuttered for an indeterminate amount of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I didn’t know if or when we would recover. I sat down and thought, if I could start my career over, what would I want to do? I
felt a pull toward nursing, specifically hospice care. So I enrolled in my local community college to complete the courses I would need to apply to nursing school. As a “mature” student, returning to the classroom more than 20 years after graduating from college was a shock to my system. As the world began to open back up and theater attendance rebounded I decided that my love for this industry outweighed my new nursing dream and I returned to the theater. I have no regrets!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am personally committed to supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society until a cure is discovered. MS is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system and currently has no cure. Nearly 1 million people in the United States live with multiple sclerosis. It affects people of all ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds, in every region of the country.
My Uncle was diagnosed with MS in the early 1990’s which is how I first learned about this disease. I have participated in fundraising activities for over 30 years, and now I participate in their Challenge Walk every year, walking 50 miles over 3 days to raise money to support those living with MS.
As a business woman, I also donate $1 for every concession combo that we sell at the theater to the MS Society.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone I hope that people remember my kindness and how I made others feel valued, loved and included. My favorite quote, which is from the classic film It’s A Wonderful Life is: “Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” This quote resonates with me deeply.
