We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kevin Nguyen. Check out our conversation below.
Kevin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I don’t believe in normal days anymore.
Growing up I thought a 9-5 would be normal. Being a business owner I now work a 24/7 shift. Lol
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kevin Nguyen I am an international barber educator and artist. I am one of the owners of ESSNTL Barbers and ESSNTL coffee. What makes our brand interesting is we do not only provide the community with amazing haircuts but we also provide the community with amazing drinks.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just a boy who loved anime, video games, and good food. I am now a man that loves anime, video games, and good food within moderation of course. Growing up it’s pretty easy getting lost in what you want to do, avoid responsibilities, and be selfish. But every body goes through their own struggles. My struggles helped shape me into a man that needs to be selfless, provide for his family, hardworking, and not complain.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
There were a lot of fears going through my journey, fear of failing, fear of not being good enough, fear of losing myself during the process of growth and change. In my opinion the word FEAR stands for False Evidence Appear Real.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version should never the real you, how ever it is a part of my identity.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I believe being a true man or a strong person is trying your best when no one is looking, finding your spark when there’s no spark in sight, keeping yourself driven when there’s no motivation.
