We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kristian Fennessy. Check out our conversation below.
Kristian, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of people are silently struggling with chronic bodily pain and discomfort. It’s something that can deeply affect your mood, focus, and quality of life, yet it’s often pushed aside or normalized. People power through it without realizing how much it’s wearing them down: physically, mentally, and emotionally. I see it all the time in my work, and it’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about massage therapy. Everyone deserves to feel good in their body.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Kris, owner of Vitality Massage Therapy based in San Diego. I provide in-home massage therapy, specializing in deep tissue, sports massage, and myofascial release. What makes my approach unique is that I bring a personalized, therapeutic experience directly to people’s homes so they can fully relax in their own space while receiving bodywork that actually addresses the root of their pain and tension. My goal isn’t just temporary relief; it’s long-term improvement and body awareness. Vitality was born from a belief that healing should be accessible, convenient, and tailored to each individual. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my services and helping more people move through life feeling stronger, freer, and more connected to their bodies.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think disconnection breaks the bonds between people; when we stop really listening, stop being present, or assume we know what someone else is going through. It creates distance, even in close relationships. What restores those bonds is genuine care and presence. Whether it’s a deep conversation, a small act of kindness, or even the healing power of touch, it reminds people they’re seen, heard, and valued. Connection is built through attention and intention.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me patience, humility, and resilience in a way that success never could. When things are going well, it’s easy to take comfort and progress for granted. But when you’re in pain, physically, emotionally, or mentally, you’re forced to slow down and really sit with yourself. That’s where you learn what you’re made of. For me, those harder moments deepened my empathy, especially in my work. I understand what it’s like to hurt and feel stuck in your own body. That perspective helps me show up more fully for others, not just as a massage therapist, but as a human being.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the massage industry tells itself is that relaxation alone is enough. Don’t get me wrong, relaxation is valuable, but many clients are dealing with chronic pain, injury, and real dysfunction in their bodies. Surface-level treatments don’t always create lasting change. Another lie is that more pressure always equals a better massage. In reality, effective bodywork is about precision, not just force. Lastly, there’s this unspoken idea that massage is a luxury; it’s not. It’s healthcare. It’s preventative, restorative, and often life-changing when done right.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I wouldn’t say I’m literally tap dancing to work, but there are definitely days that come close. The moments that light me up the most are when a client gets off the table and says, “I haven’t felt this good in years,” or “I finally slept through the night without pain.” That kind of impact is deeply fulfilling. I’ve had days where I’m driving to a session and I’m genuinely excited, not just to do the work, but to connect, to help, and to know that I’m part of someone’s healing journey. Those are the days that remind me I’m doing exactly what I’m meant to be doing.
