We recently had the chance to connect with Lara Raven Mazankowski and have shared our conversation below.
Lara Raven, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I had a proud moment recently when an owner reached out after seeing our photos online and said, “Wait… is that MY place? It looks like a magazine.” That felt great. I’d put in thoughtful touches during turnover (soft lighting, fresh hardware, great finishing touches) and it paid off. It’s not just maintenance, it’s care. And both owners and tenants feel that.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi there! I’m Lara Mazankowski, the founder of Insight Property Consulting, where I combine a love of old houses, neighborhood character, and financial tracking to help San Diego property owners and tenants feel at home—literally and figuratively.
I started Insight because I saw a gap: big management companies often miss the human part of the equation, and DIY landlords sometimes burn out. I wanted to create something in-between: thoughtful, ethical, relationship-driven property management for people who care about where and how they live.
I specialize in vintage single-family homes and small multi-units in neighborhoods like North Park, South Park, Normal Heights, and Golden Hill. These properties often need a little extra creativity and context, and I love that. Whether it’s preserving charm during a turnover or helping a tenant navigate a leaky roof without panic, I see every problem as a puzzle and every interaction as a chance to build trust.
Right now, I’m most excited about helping owners plan long-term improvements and creating happier, longer stays for tenants. Good rentals don’t have to feel temporary… and good management doesn’t have to feel corporate.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was already building things like ideas, systems, little businesses that made more sense than the ones I saw around me. I started my first company at 19, not because someone told me to, but because I couldn’t not do it. I’ve always been wired to ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” and then immediately sketch out a faster, kinder, more efficient version.
That instinct continues to be what drives me now. Insight was born from that same energy: seeing how property management usually worked and deciding, “I can do this better, smarter. I can do this with more heart.”
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly? I’ve never really come close to giving up. Challenges and setbacks happen, of course, but for me, it’s always been about service: getting owners and tenants on the same team. When everyone feels heard and supported, the tough stuff gets easier to handle. That responsibility keeps me motivated to learn, pivot, and find creative solutions no matter what.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Mostly. I keep it professional, but I’m a bit more colorful in private. Same values, just fewer filters.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I’m investing time and energy into building strong relationships with owners and tenants. Creating trust and goodwill that don’t always show immediate results. It’s about laying a foundation now for partnerships that will last 7 to 10 years and beyond.
That kind of long-term care and communication pays off in stability, fewer headaches, and properties that truly feel like home.
