Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Maria J. Minutti of Imperial beach

Maria J. Minutti shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Maria J., thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
“I’m most proud of building my intuition as a director. It’s something invisible, very personal, and shaped through years of experience, reflection, and awareness. Nobody really sees it directly, but it’s what guides me in the moments that matter—when decisions need to be made quickly, creatively, and with heart.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
“I’m María J. Minutti, a director and visual storyteller based in Mexico City, though my roots are split between San Diego and Tijuana, where I grew up. I still travel often between these cities, and that borderland experience has shaped the way I see the world — a mix of perspectives, cultures, and stories that inform my work.

My filmmaking is rooted in capturing images that feel alive, cinematic, and deeply human, guided as much by intuition as by craft. Right now, I’m working on my first feature film, Fratello, a deeply personal project that explores family, identity, and the invisible bonds that shape who we are.”

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
“Definitely my mother. She has always been such a hardworking and independent woman, and I admire her deeply. From her, I learned that nobody is going to hand you what you want — you have to work for it. She taught me that with dedication and persistence, everything is possible, as long as you don’t give up on it.”

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
“Suffering has taught me humility, and how to better read people’s true intentions — even when some try to hide them. It has also shown me the importance of genuine human connection, and that sometimes pain can be avoided by being deeply honest with yourself and with those around you. I’ve learned that how you treat yourself is a reflection of how you treat others, and that’s why I’m so passionate about communication and about evolving from true stories of resilience and human nature. Success can celebrate the outcome, but suffering teaches you how to see more clearly, connect more deeply, and live more authentically.”

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
“Respect for diversity. Growing up between San Diego and Tijuana, living in Mexico City, and studying in Vancouver taught me how powerful it is to embrace different cultures and perspectives. I protect this value at all costs, because diversity doesn’t just make stories richer — it makes us more empathetic, connected, and human.”

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel at peace when I know i’m doing the best I can, when i’m being the best version of myself while doing what I love: directing, writing (when I work on my scripts or whenever I do some writing, even if its an abstract poem). Also I am most at peace when i’m in nature.
