We’re looking forward to introducing you to Melodi Bac. Check out our conversation below.
Melodi, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now starts with walking my dog in the morning. It gives me a moment to clear my head before I dive into the creative part of my day. After that, I like to have a healthy breakfast and, if I can, squeeze in a workout to feel energized.
Most of my day is centered around writing. I spend hours building new characters, weaving storylines, and deepening the worlds I’ve created. Some days it’s drafting new chapters, other days it’s editing, or even sketching out bits of lore that may not make it into the book but add depth to the world. I often find inspiration in little breaks, sometimes just playing with my dog sparks an idea for a scene, or simply reading a chapter from another book.
In the evenings, I usually cook dinner. It’s another creative outlet for me, and then I enjoy a quiet meal with my husband. That balance between my writing world and my personal life keeps me grounded, while still allowing me to live in the imagination that fuels my work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Melodi Bac, a fantasy author and screenwriter originally from Istanbul, now based in San Diego. I published my first fantasy novel when I was sixteen, and since then, writing has been both my passion and my profession. My books are all about transporting readers into immersive worlds filled with magic, destiny, and complex characters who struggle with both power and vulnerability.
My brand as an author is rooted in epic fantasy with a strong emotional core. I love exploring themes like identity, survival, forbidden love, and the clash between light and darkness. Each story I create, whether it’s the Anka Series or my upcoming Dragon Saga, is meant to feel like stepping through a gateway into another realm. My goal is always to give readers not just a story, but an experience: a journey where they can see parts of themselves reflected in the characters, even in fantastical settings.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I think the moment that really shaped how I see the world was when I moved to America about seven years ago. Up until then, I felt like I lived in a bubble—safe, familiar, but also limiting. Moving here meant leaving everything behind: my family, my friends, my home, and my entire support system. I had to start completely from scratch in a country that was new and unfamiliar.
At first, I felt vulnerable and scared, almost like I was being reborn. But looking back now, I realize how strong and brave I was in taking that step. That experience changed me at the core. It taught me resilience, independence, and determination. I learned how to build a life for myself without relying on anyone else, and that transformation shaped not only who I am as a person, but also the worlds and characters I create in my books. The struggles, the bravery, and the fight to survive against the odds, all of that comes directly from what I lived through.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of not succeeding remains a challenge to this day. When I was a kid, I would never enter a race unless I was sure I was going to win. I never lost for years because of that but it also meant I was holding myself back, and holding back my growth.
As I grew up, I started taking more risks. I put myself out there, and yes, I got rejected and failed many times. And yes, it hurt me, just as I predicted. But then life continued, and I got to try again and again until I made it through. That’s how I managed to publish all seven of my books, and that’s how one of them was published in over 30 countries. This fear was my chain, and even though I still feel the ghost of that chain, I keep moving forward.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
This question actually made me laugh. In the age of social media and AI, what is really real? Does ‘real’ even exist anymore? I try to be as authentic and real as possible, but of course, I hide my bad days from the public eye. If you look at my social media accounts, it seems like I have the best life: I have an amazing dog, an amazing husband, we own a thriving medspa, and I keep writing and publishing my books. Everything looks perfect!
But the truth is, I do have bad days where I doubt myself. Some days I just want to go into my shell and hide from the world. Sometimes the emotions overwhelm me, and I write not to create, but to escape, something no one really knows about. What I’ve learned is that everyone is going through very difficult things in their lives, but no one likes to show it. The pressure of social media makes us reluctant to share those moments, and sometimes it even causes envy, because we don’t know what the other person is truly going through.
So, to answer your question: I try to be as real as possible, but there will always be a part of me that only my closest people will know. Recently, I also started sharing more of my real self with my social media subscribers (@melodibac), and it feels like a safe place there.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I’ve done many interviews over the years, but this one is such a unique question, especially since ‘immortality’ is a theme I constantly write about. If immortality were real, I would build a safe place for my family and closest friends, a sanctuary where no violence could touch us and only peace and love would exist. So, my version of heaven.
I would probably extend that safe place to all pure souls, like children and animals, protecting their innocence for eternity. And of course, I would keep writing and writing and writing, till forever. I imagine building a Phoenix Publishing House, where stories would rise endlessly from the ashes, just like in my book Return of Anka, where the phoenix never truly dies. In immortality, creation would never end.
