We’re looking forward to introducing you to Olesia Matiushchenko. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Olesia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
One of the moments that recently made me feel really proud was realizing how many clients come back to us, sometimes within the same year. Since we opened our self-portrait studio two years ago, I’ve had the joy of watching people capture their milestones — from pregnancy to a baby’s first year, birthdays, family reunions, and personal achievements. It’s amazing how many stories and emotions can be preserved in photos. That’s when it really hit me: I’ve built a space where people can be true to themselves, celebrate who they are, and walk away with high-quality images that feel authentic. Seeing those repeat clients and the trust they put in us has been incredibly rewarding.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Alesia, the founder of Sphere Photo, San Diego’s first self-portrait studio. I created Sphere to give people a space where they can capture professional-quality photos without needing a photographer. What makes us unique is that our clients are fully in control of the camera – it’s a fun, empowering experience that feels both private and creative. For me, it’s not just about photos; it’s about giving people the confidence to be themselves in front of the camera and walk away with images they truly love. Right now, I’m also expanding on how Sphere can show up at events and create memorable, interactive photo experiences.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
What’s taught me the most about work is running my own business and building Sphere Photo from the ground up. It’s shown me that attention to detail, empathy, and creating an experience that truly solves a problem for people are just as important as the product itself. I’ve learned how crucial it is to listen to clients, adapt quickly, and balance creativity with operational efficiency. Most of all, I’ve realized that meaningful work comes from creating value that makes people feel confident, happy, and proud of the moments they capture.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
One experience that really changed my perspective was an early attempt at launching a photography service that didn’t have a clear client experience or structure. It failed hard – bookings were low, and clients were confused. That failure taught me that a great product alone isn’t enough; you have to design the entire experience around your clients’ needs. It shifted my approach entirely and led me to create Sphere Photo, where every detail – from privacy and control to unlimited shots and fast delivery is designed to solve real problems for our clients.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the photography industry tells itself is that more expensive or complex setups automatically make better photos. In reality, people want moments that feel real — not stiff poses or intimidating studios. At Sphere Photo, we’ve learned that giving clients freedom, comfort, and control leads to more genuine, meaningful images, and often better results than the traditional approach.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I think the thing I’d regret most is not fully sharing the experiences and opportunities I’ve created with Sphere Photo. I want to continue helping people capture genuine moments, celebrate milestones, and feel confident in front of the camera. Missing the chance to expand this experience , whether through events, collaborations, or new ways to connect with people is something I’d regret, because I’ve seen how much joy and confidence it brings to clients.
